Ludum Dare 37 — December 9th-11th, 2016 — Theme: One Room

Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

The first feedback made me realize steering was pretty hard/impossible, so I changed one variable for the 1.01 version on Monday morning after the Compo to make turning a bit easier. If you feel this is small enough to be a "bug fix" judge by the easier 1.01 version, otherwise use the 1.00 version.

The game just restarts when you finish, but it does save and update your best time so you can try and beat it (this is saved after closing the game as well).

I added a Jam version 1.02 that defaults to even easier steering than version 1.01, as well as the possibility to toggle back to 1.00 and 1.01 steering if wanted. This version also changes the geometry slightly so that there's less risk that the first thing you do is get stuck in a corner. Original 1.00 version is equivalent to setting both toggles to False.

Other tips for the turning is to start turning one way, then turn the other way to compensate for the force - it is meant to be a bit hard in the beginning in return for being more satisfying after you get it.

Here's the main music theme I did, I was going for a WipeOut vibe:

I started out with plans to follow the theme a bit closer but they didn't really work out, oh well

v1.03: fixed bug where it doesn't restart after all checkpoints unless you beat your personal best time

I really want to like this for the sweet neon colors and bumpin' tunes, but using the arrow keys to change your viewpoint, along with getting knocked all over the place, makes it really difficult. I got two checkpoints and then blasted into a corner where I was stuck.

It could be a lot of fun as some kind of cyberpunk message runner game but it's basically impossible to play right now. Sweet soundtrack tho, foreal.

Thanks for playing! Yeah I got very used to the controls when playing, I had someone else try it just before the deadline and it did not go well for them. If you or anyone else tries again, the key to the controls is to start turning one way, then immediately turn the other way to compensate for the force.

There's a light respawn thing in place if you get stuck somewhhere, if you stay still for about ~10 seconds you'll respawn, though other vehicles might bump you around too much for this to set in.

Glad you enjoyed the tunes!

Very trippy feel to this, I was bouncing around, spinning all over the place, firing randomly at things that I just couldn't hit, then getting shot by something else and spinning out of control. Even in the v1.01 version the steering felt pretty tough, like I was sliding around on ice.

The game itself was fun though, and as confusing and hard as it was I still had fun with it. Probably not the sort of game to play while lacking in sleep though. I did like the music, suits the game very well.

Loved it! The graphics are very simplistic but after a while I kind of liked that about the game. It came it quite well thanks to the awesome sound and neon lightning. I liked the controls but the game gets quite easy when you know how to control the ship. To bad though that there is no victory screen with your stats for that game. Now you suddenly start over when you found all checkpoints.

I really liked the art. The game reminded me of the battle mode in Mario Kart. However, I do think the enemies were just a small annoyance and the game would have been pretty much the same if you got rid of them and the shooting.

I'd never expect a racing game for "One room" theme :D
Still, it's quite hard to get used to controls but after that it's real fun!

I really liked the visuals. Steering was pretty hard as you realized yourself. I also think the camera could use some smoothing so it didn't follow you so directly to give better feel to the game.

Funny little game, loved the art style, and a funky (or so) little song in the background playing.

Had fun, good work
