A Theft of Mass

by uberneen - 48 Hour Compo Entry

Greetings Planetary Assassin!

Use the WASD keys, Arrows, or Number Pad to maneuver your ship and your mouse to fire your mining laser as you burrow to the core of this unsuspecting planet.
Once it loses the mass of its core it will be tiny indeed, and destined to spiral into fiery oblivion.

Graphics were created with Gimp.

Sounds were created with SFXR and Audacity.

The code was written in nano.

The language and build environment was Flex SDK and make.

I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed making it!

I didn't like the controlling of the ship, that was the biggest downfall for me, if you touched anything, your dead almost every single time, trying to get back down to where I was mining crystals, killed me many times.

Really enjoyed it. Reminded me of that miner game on xbla, which is one of my favorite games ever. Good job!

Loved it, I got down to the coal level before a clumsy descent had me eating rock!
Cool idea and executed well.
I'll be playing this again and also showing it to friends as a challenge activity.

Kerbal Space Program meets Terraria? :)

The sluggish controls ruins it a bit. Maybe there could be upgrades to improve the handling?

Thanks for all the feedback!
I think the controls could definitely use a little work. On the one hand it should be reasonably difficult, but it also kind of feels like you're flying through mud.
It also might help if I bounce you off a collision or destroy the block instead of letting you sink into it and keep taking damage.

Never seen such game before where not falling on the ground and staying in the air was also hard. It adds a whole new level to such games. A really cool game :)

As has been said, the controls are what did me in each time. I even blew up trying to dock because the option never came up and I didn't realize I was moving too fast to stop.

Neat concept, but it could use a fair bit of tightening up. Controls felt a bit sluggish, as has been mentioned, and the delay on exploding when you hit the ground made it feel a bit floaty. I also seemed to have some interaction issues where I could target one block with my laser but not another a similar distance away.

Had my sound really loud. Crashed myself after 5 seconds. Became deaf. Thank you sir.

Controlling the ship got annoying quite fast, especially when colliding. The upgrading mechanic and overall gameplay is quite good though.

Danik says ...
Apr 23, 2012 @ 8:44pm

Yes, definitely make the player bounce when colliding, that would help a lot.

Apr 23, 2012 @ 9:57pm

The ship doesn't move fast enough, an upgrade for the would have done wonders. The aesthetics of the game are pretty decent and the concept was really good. Like a remake of motherload.

Interesting idea, and I think there is a kernel of a fun game here. As a suggestion, maybe add some recoil when the ship hits the ground? Also, the laser controls seem a bit wonky.

Apr 23, 2012 @ 10:09pm

I just ran through it again from start to finish, only my second time :/

I think impulse needs to be sped up and the collisions should bounce for sure. The ship movement was built to be a lot like a lunar lander game, which is why it's so delicate.
I'll have to play around with the laser. I tried to get a usable distance without having a sqrt in my frame loop and I think sometimes the mouse click lands on the wrong layer. If you click and hold it works reliably.

Not bad. Not bad at all. Since you've added upgrades, it forced me to play almost to the end, even if slow flying back and not much of a challenge except controls (which I found simple and that's strange, because I usually have problems with diffuculty of LD games others say are easy).
Didn't finish though... Bought the core device something, but I couldnt find out how to steal the core and in the end burned in it.

Really fun! Seeing as hitting rocks is pretty much instant death, I would have preferred an engine upgrade to a hull one. Digging up the last bits of oil to get the mass extract was a real chore. Other than that though, it was fun digging a huge pit and escaping at the end.

MadGnomeGamer says ...
Apr 24, 2012 @ 12:08am

Cool idea...but the ship needs about 100x as much health, and it should be easier to stop a fall, and you should be able to zap from farther away, and you should be more generous with the collision checking for the dock. Also, I think I should bounce when I hit a rock instead of it behaving like I ran through death lasers.

I really enjoyed this game, so it's a shame that you need to restart from the beginning rather than just being penalised in some more minor way (e.g. keep upgrades but lose all cargo)

Cool game and fun/ different concept. It was quite difficult to get the laser shooting intially. Good work

Interesting mix of ideas. I didn't really see why I'd do anything but drill straight down, and it was frustrating to touch the ground a little and die. But I did play a few times to build up my ship. :)

I like this. I can see a great game potentially. Seems like my laser doesn't work sometimes, but not sure if that's my laptop. The abrupt sound also took me by surprise!

Clicking on a tile didnt always fire the laser. Quite hard to control, but fun anyway.

Thanks again for the feedback, suggestions and kind words. It turns out the bulk of the laser issue was that the hit circle was not centered, but I still took mouse capture to a more reliable and persistent container. Collision is looking pretty good too, but that version won't be public until it gets a little more polish. The current link still goes to the original compo version.

Good job, I liked the upgrades. The movement, however was a bit awkward making docking and not crashing pretty hard.

Definitely has potential but I couldn't finish it as I crash into the ground after getting a few upgrades and I didn't want to start again.

Instructions say wasd controls, but all I could do was steer as I fell? I destroyed a block once, but every other time I was dead before I could read the instructions.

uberneen says ...
Apr 29, 2012 @ 4:39am

@gritfish It works a lot like a lunar lander game, holding W or Up is going to engage a thruster. Movement isn't going to be instant.

Lol it was pretty cool but when it said "press space to dock" and I did my ship fell and blew up :P

uberneen says ...
Apr 29, 2012 @ 12:44pm

The message stays up for a second or so, but the dock hotspot is exactly one tile in the original version. You have to hit space immediately or hover around in there.
The docking hit area is larger in the updated version.

Not bad, these games usually are up my alley.
However the slow controls take away too much. Especially when you have a deeper pit and try to go down and just can't stop fast enough.
Engine upgrade!

Lunar Lander meets MotherLoad. Well done, apart from the controls - you could give the ship a bit more thrust. Also, the camera should adapt to where the ship and where is it heading and should show what are you approaching. I really missed the laser/digging sounds. This game has potential for a tablet game, with accelerometers for controlling the ship, and touch input to point at what you want to dig. On a side note, the mouse keys seemed to stick sometimes. They didn't react to presses, or acted like they're pressed when they weren't. Apart from that - well done!

Cool idea. Sound did fit.

It's cool, but I needed some time to figure out how to dock, as I thought I would have to actually land on the bottom of the dock.

I had fun. I was killed very quickly when I got to the core and that frustrated me because I wasn't sure what came next!

uberneen says ...
May 2, 2012 @ 10:20pm

I probably need to animate the core block with lava or something so it's more obvious. When you see the core layer, it's the one block made out of core layer texture by itself. You just mine it and escape.
I thought about a handful of fancier ways to steal it, but there was no time for implementation.

Controlling the ship was a bit hit or miss, and for some reason the mouse didn't always work.

DaveDobson says ...
May 7, 2012 @ 6:59am

Took a while to get used to the controls - it might be more fun if they were a bit more responsive, although that might be harder to run. Fun to go around mining stuff, though, and the upgrade system is quite elaborate. Nice work!

I didn't find the controls to be all that bad once I got the hang of it. I've played games with similar controls on a ship (Ship Chip Lander from Cosmic Osmo, for instance) that were a LOT harder to handle. I loved the idea of purchasing a Mass Storage Container to steal the core and fly away!
