Just starting with my game – Taken

I dunno what to do, I have some ideas but none of them are convincing, and for now the project’s codename is Taken (no, I mean, that’s the codename)

Anyways, I am preparing my workspace and all necessary stuff for my project, here a photo of the first one:

The competition started 04:00 local time and it’s now 08:15 – I’m still half asleep and I have no idea what kind of game to make out of this theme… going to go have breakfast somewhere and stock up on supplies while I try to come up with an idea…

In the meanwhile here’s picture of my chaotic little workspace:

Workspace #1: Starbucks.

I’m all done for today and I still have enough caffeine in my system to keep my dreams strange. I goofed off a lot during these first few hours and didn’t get any real work done. I did come to the conclusion that my favorite audio sequencer available for Linux is now Renoise. It’s not open source, but damn if it’s not a cool piece of software. It’s not Ableton Live, but then, Live doesn’t run on Linux, and it costs three times as much. I feel a little silly sticking myself with a new tool to learn in the middle of the contest, but I’m determined to get some music in my entry, and also work completely in Linux while I do it. Good night!

Precompo declarations, photos.

Framework:  This Stego AS3 framework thing that I’ve accumulated over the last several months:  http://bitbucket.org/excitemike/stego/

IDE: FlashDevelop. compiling with mxmlc.

Music: I’m thinking WarioWare DIY, then recorded and edited in GoldWave.

Graphics: A copy of Photoshop CS 1 which as far as you know was obtained completely legitimately.

Sound Effects: I bet you can guess this one.

Will be listening to: Switching Pandora between a DragonForce station and a station based on music from movie montages (on which the Transformers: The Movie (animated) soundtrack comes up often! :) ).

For timelapse: I will be using Keeyai’s Chronolapse on account of it’s awesomeness.

Desk:

The Brachiosaurus will be relocated before the compo begins.

Refridgerator:

In case you wondered whether I like bottled water.

Additional foodstuffs:

Inspiration:

I should be playing the GameCube version with bongos.

Me + Hat + FC Twin + Super Game Boy + Game Boy Donkey Kong + Projector = Heaven

Sauce Control: Mercurial, which I love.

Favorite Dinosaur: Microraptor gui

And actually I may use Unity, depending on what kind of ideas I get once the theme is announced, but the above is most likely.

I need to get a decent camera.  The webcam built into the cheap laptop is kind of a pain to use.

Not exactly my place, but it’ll do.

So I had a bit of a curve ball thrown at me earlier in the week, my computer finally up and died.  So I’ll be working in at my space at the uni here.  Luckily I’ve been throwing everything needed for development onto my portable HD, so I should be good as long as I don’t need to actually install anything.

Workspace:

CRT dual monitor! It's like I'm at NASA!

Tools will probably be:

-Flash Develop, because it can run off a portable HD.

-Flixel, with the base code JonothanW threw out there… which I should probably look at before we start.

-sfxr and musagi, because DrPetter is King.

-Graphics Gale for graphics, because it does pixels.

Also, food:

Ohhhhhh. Now with 4 kinds of grain!

I cleaned off my desk and bought some provisions for the weekend (Lorenz chips, Shark energy drinks, OJ). Here a pic of it, although it’s not impressive, or really tidy for that matter.

In the picture the OJ has been replaced with an orange+coke soft drink. :)

Thats it for today. I’m going to distance myself from the digital world, and try to relax, maybe do some stuff around the house. Go to bed early, and wake up when the compo starts. Then I plan to burn through the 48 hours with my 8 cans of energy drink. I have the next week off (no collage lectures) so I can afford to get sleep deprived and zombified. :) Hope it will give me the edge I need.

Allright, Ill bite.

This is where most of the work actually goes down...

Well, Im in. This is my first LD, and as of such, my intention is to be amazing and do better then everyone, on account of how amazing I am.

I plan to use Flash Develop for my ide, along with Flixel, graphics gale for art, some combination of fruity loops and all my physical gear for music, my mic, sfxr, more of fruity, maybe maxmsp, maybe soundforge for sound effects, mappy if I use tilemaps…. Thats probably plenty.

I should probably go buy more smokes before this starts, I seem to be down to one, and Im pretty sure the girlfriend is going to smoke some too….

This is probably going to be where I spend the second largest amount of time...

Well Im out picking up addictive drugs, I should probably make sure I have an ample supply of coffee… that might be important.

I seem to have my music gear all assembled. I should probably get myself a chair though….

All the gear Ill need for the soundtrack, all in one convenient location...

Yeah… I think Im in, I got nothing to do the next couple days. I think Im sposed to grab a beer with an old friend, but I can just make him come to me, and be kinda crazy (hell, he may actually be participating in this, didnt think to ask him… he probably isnt if he plans to bring me beer tho…)

Anyhow. Should be fun, I already have some cool ideas.

…if my game colors are off I can always blame that horrendous peppermint striped covering I’m using to hide the splintered sheet of 3/4″ plywood.  I’ll probably remove the bucket hat from my left speaker if I have to do any audio too…

This is how the office looks in my new apartment, and this will serve as my workspace this weekend. Look, there’s even a plant! (although, I gotta admit, it’s plastic)
