Just wanted to make a new post because even though we submitted our game yesterday we are taking part in the JAM and wanted to say congratulations to everybody, even if you finished or not, really. I’m just amazed at what this community can do! Good luck everyone and lets play!

You are the villain, Robin Banks, a punny banker who has gone too far.

A Villain’s Demise

So its over again, at last. These hours just fly away! Its been an awesome weekend, and as always I’m looking forward to the next LD already. But hey, check out my entry!

Basically you control a villain, which is.. overpowered by an even greater villain. In free-fall you have to struggle to stay alive! The original idea was to include a boss element, but that had to be put aside in order to complete it.

It ended up with a cool little endless platformer. You have to time your jumps, utilize the double-jump cleverly, and take advantage of a certain time-altering ability as you collect points, health and other pickups. All this while you’re dodging bullets and super-deadly razorblades emerging all over!

This time i clocked in 16 hours of development, and i even managed to create a timelapse video! The video will be uploaded shortly, but for now – play the game! Can you achieve a score above 1500?

Give me Dat candy!

I solved the bug, and now i can spawn kids at an arbitrary rate. I added road depth, and i organized the code so that to add a new character is as easy as steal a candy to a kid :3.

now , i need to figure out where to put the damn goat. But first, some hours to sleep. it’ s midnight in here. See you later, and good luck for all the other evil creatives of the world :3

What an exciting day!

My Ludum Game

Just a little update on my Ludum Dare game (for Ludum Dare 25, “You Are the Villain”. Yeah, lovin’ the theme!).

It’s one of those endless runners (because I hate making levels, random is the way to go).

And, in the spirit of my Irish Indie Challenge, I’ve gone for a crazy art style – everything is in shades of red 😀

So you’re running and jumping and trying to escape. Because what kind of villain are you if you’ve never had a daring rooftop escape?

Keep in mind that I haven’t made the player sprites yet, they’ll be red too (same fella as on the title screen). I’m really happy with the art so far – it’s unique and not all that bad, if I do say so myself!

Altogether I’m having loads of fun, in the Ludum Dare spirit. Game-jamming is a fantastic way to spend a weekend.

What is a villain?

Had to out and do stuff instead of programing…  But that gave me time to think and plan my game. Due of my rather philosophical nature I started to think about what being a villain actually is. I really wanted to find an odd view to the subject so I could make something least partially unique.

Evil is something that we, people, don’t like to be done to us or others. It’s usually something that causes harm or loss of power and freedom. When a person is described as evil, we usually mean that he does not really care what others think and freely does these evil things, such as steals, kills, destroys and so on.

Villain is, in my opinion, somebody that can be described as evil, harmful to others. They usually do things that we consider bad to reach personal goals, witch are also usually “rather evil” (destroying the world, global domination, money…).

So, typical villain has an evil goal  (personal gain, satisfaction) and evil actions (generally ignoring will and rights of others).

And we can say that typical hero will have good goals (“common good”) and good actions (treats others as equals).

Both of earlier definitions are inaccurate, however. Usually heroes have to do “bad” things, such as killing, to reach their noble goal. And our villains might also be just misunderstood. Robin Hood was clearly a hero (or least shown as a hero), but why today’s pirates stealing for their families to eat aren’t?

Do actions make your goals evil? Do goals make your actions evil? Is a person with noble goal doing evil things to reach that goal a villain? Or is a good doing person with bad intentions evil?

These are the questions in my head right now. I will try to make a game with somehow odd way to view villains. I just hope I can start it soon, ‘cos time is running out…

So, to make sure that my main character is a villain, are evil actions or evil motives enough, or should he/she have both to be a true villain?

villaneous brainstorm

Here’s a few thought on the theme*. “You are the villain” (+1 goat)

Am I, or are you? Is the villain a goat, or is the goat the villain’s pet? What are a villain’s characteristics etc…

Now for the most important question: Should my villain have a German or British accent?

Tools of the trade:

Unity3D, Cinema4D, VillainGenerator5D

If I have time at the end (fat chance) I will be doing xbox360 controller integration using
No other pre-made assets are planned so far.

Oh and good luck to everyone.

* Which I didn’t vote for, in fact I voted that theme down every time, and therefore should totally hate it because I’m absolutely not prepared for anything like it. Oh that sounds like tremendous fun!
