6 Hours in and the progress is slow

Browsing through all the blog posts on Ludum Dare makes me realize just how slow I am at creating anything useful. Sure, I haven’t picked the easiest path with creating a game from scratch (except my SmallGameFramework) in C++. At the same time it can be motivational to see what other people have already done.

I’ve been streaming on Twitch and Livecoding.tv for the past 6h and all I can show right now is a moving sprite and even with that, the movement isn’t really where I want it to be. Additionally I think the movement code needs to be changed again, because when I have a collision system in place, I’ll have to be able to influence the movement, but maybe there’s another way around it.

One Room

My current idea is to have some sort of a puzzle game – not very original – where you have to solve some puzzles to leave the room. Currently I have no idea how I’ll get the art done, but I know some people that might be able to help out. But first I need to actually get some sort of game running, otherwise there’s no point in creating art for it.

One thing on my ToDo list for the next few hours is to also quickly go out and grab some supplies, with tomorrow being Sunday and only a few stores are open.

Let’s go into the next round of productivity! :)

Let’s give this another go!

It’s been five Ludum Dare Jams with SynthGuitar since I last participated and here we are again. I made sure that the weekend is free to focus all the time on Ludum Dare. Let’s begin!

The chosen topic is: One room

As per usual the first idea that pops into my head is some platformer, but as the past has proven, making a platformer from scratch in the given time frame is quite tricky, especially since I’ve never implemented a fully working platformer. Not putting the idea right off, but maybe there are more interesting things to go after.

The plan right now is to first get some sleep and in the morning brainstorm a bit in what ways “room” can be interpreted and how far one can stretch the definition of “one”.

Here’s a cute dog picture just because dogs are awesome!

Compo Submission Complete – Rosebud (Growing)

What do you do for a 48 hr game jam when you will also be looking after your kids at the same time?

Keep it simple!

Screenshot 2015-12-13 19.48.20

Rosebud is using the Growing theme and you play as a flower,a rose to be more precise. Surrounded by giant trees your only wish is to see the sun but to do that you are going have to weave your way through the thick prickly branches of the trees surrounding you. Your only help comes in the form of the rain and drops of sun falling through the canopy & a helpful Bumble Bee or 2, but watch out for the Acid rain as it will not help your progress.

I knew I wanted to keep things simple so I decided to take a basic Shmup control scheme and remove the shooting, I guess that makes this just a Mup then. Once I had built the controls I designed a basic leveling mechanic to allow the rose to grow not only in length but to blossom as a flower.

rose

I purposely kept the art on the simple side as I knew I wouldn’t have a lot of time to invest and as I mentioned in a previous post my intention was not to blow anyone away but I wanted to have a submission so I could play and rate other peoples games. The theme was not one that inspired greatly (just a little but more than the other one) but that said i actually really like the game. Plus the option to polish it up at a later date is always there.

Screenshot 2015-12-13 19.49.22

When I entered LD33 I submitted a game without sound and despite not selecting audio as criteria to be scored in I received a great deal of feed back about the lack of sound so I wanted to not make that mistake again. If like me you aren’t musically gifted I would recommend to website http://www.beepbox.co/ its a really easy to use Chiptune site and I did all the games audio with it (for better or worse).

So please play, rate and comment on my game, I live for feedback!

But while I have your attention please check out the non LD game I am working on right now which I am working towards a January release. Its called Mechonomic Boom and you can see a quick playthrough here. Its a management game of the Kairosoft elk (Game Dev Story et al). Where you are running a Mech factory in a 80’s cartoon inspired future and you get to build Mechs to your own design and rent or sell them. It is a 1 man made game and is something I am really passionate about and took some time away from this weekend to jam with you all.

but for now I am off to play and rate some of your games, might even stream some of the games I play, so if you are already finished drop me a comment and I might play/stream yours. I will also play and rate anyone who does the same for me so make sure to leave a comment on Rosebud after playing and I will get to yours. Although if you get past level 10 keep quiet about what happens in the comments, that’s a suprise.

Good evening devs and gamers!

This Ludum Dare we’re working on a small survival shooter with simple progression that is similar to Snake. The theme for this game is Growing. We decided not to go for the two-button controls theme. In this game, a band of Knights try to survive the attack of the evil executioners! As player levels up, their numbers and firepower grow, but enemies increase in number as well.

– Stream Link! –

We already have most of the environment done including the characters and animations, you can see a bit of it from the following GIFs:

Knight follower – Idle animation

Enemy executioner – Idle animation

We still have a lot to do, including the environment props and projectile models,  particle systems, audio and UI. Our plan is to make the game as juicy and as polished as possible. We have some gameplay GIFs to show as well:

Initial gameplay – Less enemies

Enemy numbers increase and player levels up!

We’ll get back with more updates late, we still have a lot to do. Want to follow our Stream? Click here!

Playandrate*witty, intellectual, vaguely pop-culture oriented comment about playing and rating more Ludum Dare entries*

Hey, everyone! I’ve finally managed to settle in a bit to continue playing your games. I know we had quite the lengthy experience last night, playing a very enjoyable (but lengthy to stream) board game created during Ludum Dare — but we’ll be going back to our regularly-scheduled list now!

I’m going to continue to play in accordance to how people show up in chat via the stream, to give the best personal feedback possible. Just remember that I will be playing all the games on my list regardless, so even if you don’t jump in during a stream, I will continue to play, rate and give feedback to your entry when I’m able to!

Looking forward to seeing you there! :)

PlayandrateWalk right in, sit right down, we’re gonna play some real cool games.

Night two and I’ve already got quite a substantial list to work through.

Don’t worry — if you don’t want me to play your game until you’re around, I will keep it on the list until you are! We’re cool about that ’round here.

I also had some curious people watching the stream last night — feel free to pop in and just discuss game development if you wish. It’s totally awesome and completely acceptable to have micro-discussions and the more people other than myself giving feedback , the better. I go over a lot, but I can’t discuss everything! It’s simply not humanly possible. 😀

See you soon!

We’re in — and I’m eating well! Daily Feedback?

Hello, everyone!

Obligatory “I’m in!” — it’s great to see all of you for LD#32!

I would have posted this earlier but the site was going down in flames as the theme was announced — and what a theme it is.

I’m so thrilled to be in the team I am this round — Rachel Rios is back (not coding like last time, to her gargantuan level of relief) and we’re joining forces with two of the people that helped create “Bugged Out” last round — Daniel Snd and Thiago Adamo PxlDJ — to form a SUPER MEGA AWESOME TEAM.

The LudumDaVengers, if you will.

While we’ve already gotten things underway in terms of conceptual idea, I wanted to make my first post about a couple of things close to my heart — first and foremost: my Ludum Diet.

(Aw yisss two Ludum Dare puns already and barely 150 words in.)

I think most of us can relate to theMeatly’s comic about Game Jamming, and what such activities do to our bodies. While I do work hard, and get barely any sleep, my worst offense out of all of these is I starve myself. Not on purpose, mind. I literally forget to eat. Unlike some, I do not have a personal sla — I mean, husband/wife/mom/dad/girlfriend/boyfriend/sibling who will cook for me. When I do manage to eat, my diet is in shambles and I go right for the bad stuff.

Well this time, it’s going to be different.

healthyeating

Three days. One game. Broccoli and carrots.

That’s right. No energy drinks. No nachos. No chips or doughnuts. No pizza. No fast food. Everything’s pre-prepped, packaged, and ready to be consumed. The only naughty things I’ll allow are coffee and alcohol (because beer), and a bit of that chocolate bar I had stashed away for later.

I will also be sharing some of the recipes/tricks I’m doing to ensure I’m eating healthy food through the whole weekend.

Friday, 17th:

– On Thursday I prepped a “Veggie Bucket”. This is, literally, a very large tupperware bucket filled with chopped vegetables, ready to eat with your fingers. This one’s pretty easy to put together, and it keeps really well in a sealed container. Go to the grocery store, pick out whatever veggies you love, bring them home, chop them up and throw them into the bucket. Whenever you need something, those veggies will always be there to give you nutritious fuel.

– Three words: Avocado. Chocolate. Pudding. Food of the gods. Best stuff I’ve ever eaten. Full of nutrients and the good fats your brain needs to come up with the best ideas. Get yourself a blender and 5 nearly ripe avocados. Scoop the avacado innards (minus the big pit) into the blender. Add 1/2 a cup of moo milk or coconut milk. Add 7 tablespoons cocoa. Add 10 tablespoons honey. Put in some vanilla extract and a couple pinches of salt. Blend. Feast. Enjoy. (Best chilled with a sliced up banana.)

feedbackhour

ALSO: I will be streaming again for sure after Ludum Dare.

I would like to stream during Ludum Dare. I was thinking of doing a “Daily Feedback Hour” where people can throw me questions, progress images, current builds, etc, to get quick feedback on the fly. I can’t do it the entire day, but I’m more interested in seeing if people would like something like that.

Please let me know in the comments!

Good luck everyone! Stay healthy!
