Thank you for LD34!

Time to say thank you all again, for all the feedback we received for our game!

We hope to be here April again. It’s our first LD and we had a lot of good time playing games. It was more fun than we expected to review games. We did our best to be valuable in our comments too (positives or negatives).
We did a making of too… well, kinda.

Here is a 3D rendered version of our 2D character (the background is a random picture we found on Google, we’re not into the 3D modeling, it was just for fun).kevin_the_snowman

And again: Happy New Year!

Nunsaram – post-mortem? what?

Posted by

This is our first jam, and I guess it could be called a success because we made it!

quite a late post, but still…

We (me and endwl) made a game called Nunsaram. Nunsaram is the Korean word for snowman.

We had a fun time. I learned how important goals were, and also how to package & distribute games. Endwl learned how to do good pixel art.

We actually made a gigantic u-turn around the 48 hour point. We were adding too much “new”/unplanned aspects to the game, and we had reached a limit. Slow typing speed, too many bugs too fix, too many pixels to color, and thus, low morale. Eventually we reverted to our original idea and half the code in Game.hx rendered useless.

Oh yes. i used Haxe + OpenFL on Sublime Text. no IDE. not this time.

Endwl used something, but I don’t know.

We used a Yamaha piano and Audacity and sfxr for the sound

I’m getting the timelapse (29 hours whoo!) together, so it’ll be up soon.

Next time, we’re gonna focus more on the “original goal” and save time for sound and stuff.

Happy holidays! and vote Nunsaram pls

p.s. what is a post-mortem (I’m new)

Woo hoot! Submitted. This might be my most playable LD48 entry ever, but that’s not saying a lot. I tried out a new language and library (the Luxe engine, part of the snowkit toolset). But this time I spent a few evenings beforehand warming up, and I think it really helped. I wish I had time to add more stuff, the gameplay is not very fleshed out, but I think it gets the idea across and provides a few minutes of challenge.

Go visit my entry page to play:

Anyways, going to get some rest now. I had a great time, and I can’t wait to try out some of the other entries. Maybe this time I’ll have some time to play and vote.

Entire game on one old shitty screen.

Joining the JAM instead…

There’s still a lot to add, so instead of joining the compo with this shitty unfinished game, I’ll take a day more and actually make a good game 😉

Right now it’s just a game on a screen, but I want to add items in the room (like CDs) so that you can interact with the computer.

Everyone’s asleep.. Enjoy SnowFall

That’s finally done: after one night where I hoped I could have slept (and no, I didn’t work on my entry, my kids were a little sick), my entry is done and uploaded !

SnowFall is a game like TowerFall, but you are a snow man, and you throw snow balls ! (also it’s made with no artistic talent and within a week-end)
You have a limited amount of them, but it refills after some time.
The unique level included here allows to teleport in the corners and has 4 shields that you can use to protect yourself against the other.

Multiplayer : SnowFall is multiplayer only, that means you have to play with at least one friend (or your cat, or your dog..).
X360 Controlers : the game supports currently only X360 controlers on Windows, I hope you have at least two of them !
Unity 5 : I tried the beta of Unity 5 for this project, so I hope you will be able to play it on your computer.
Snow flakes : If you don’t enjoy the game, enjoy the snow flakes falling, following the wind, in the background

I hope you’ll enjoy playing it !

A Battle of Snow & Fire

Yep; I couldn’t help it! I am afterall “SneManden” (translates to “the snowman”) and I don’t really care that the right theme didn’t win. (But the winning theme is okay too!)

So in my game you control a happy little snowman that must fight fierce, powerful and fire breathing dragons! Here, take a sneak-peak:

A Battle of Snow & Fire

Looking forward to playing a lot of great games this december :)

Snowman Sumo Playable Build!

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Well, statistically none of you even know about this game, but that’s besides the point. 😉

Snowman Sumo is, well, a sumo game about snowmen. Roll around to grow in size, then use your increased heft to knock the other snowman off the island. Play against a friend, from the comfort of your browser window.

There’s still some polish to add – notably there’s no audio yet. I’d also like to add a mechanic where collisions knock snow off both of you, but I’ll see if I get to that.

First Day over, I had some fun

A few hours later.. A clean install (multiple beta installed got in the way :s ) and a big fear when I though Unity just couldn’t open the project anymore (hopefully, removing the Library folder fixed it), it’s time to go to bed !

What we have now :

– Up to 4 players (I told you !)

– A player select screen (from 2 to 4 players, you can not select your character yet)

– No cat yet, no music nor sound effect yet

– Random spawn positions (well, random choose from the available pre designed positions of course)

– Some change in the level: it’s really bad for now, but I had to try the mechanics and tweak the physics. That’s not perfect yet, but the feeling is good.

– Snowmen can be.. well, just watch the GIF, that’s funny.

Good night !

Kids are sleeping.. again !

Back there, the kids went to sleep half an hour ago, so I had time to add some stuff :

– support for 2 players using X360 controlers,

– different colors on snowmen so you can tell which one you play (!)

– fight ! Erh.. no, Shoot ! You can shoot up to 3 snow balls, then you’ll have to wait, defenseless until they respawn.

I installed GifCam to be able to capture screen and generate a Gif, that’s useful !

Let’s see how it goes now :

Next steps : snowmen must be hurt, snow must fall, support up to 4 players, different and random spawn positions, level design, and a cat (of course a cat, it’s Ludum Dare, remember ?!)

Kids Up, it’s not snowing yet

So, kids were up early, around 3pm today, they’re used to sleep at least 30minutes more !

For now, we got two snowmen, they can jump, hang on platform, wall jump, slide and throw snow balls !

It’s not yet a two players game, but it’s close. Graphics made in less than 5 minutes (you can tell), no sound, no music.

Oh, and I test Unity 5 beta on this one.

Snowman Sumo, midafternoon Saturday

Things are going pretty well! You’re now actually a snowman rather than a snowball, and gather up snow as you roll around. I’ve just added the second player (not pictured) but they both currently share the same controls so it’s not much of a game. 😉

Embedding a tweet below because I don’t want to crush the LD site with gifs.

Kids are taking their nap.. I’m in !

All is in the title: it’s 1:30pm here on saturday, the kids are just beginning their nap, I’m starting !

Using Unity3D as game engine, not sure yet for art and music.

The theme is Entire game on one screen, but that’s too vague, so I will be using “snowman” also as a constraint !

So… An entire game on one screen with snowmen..

And here’s my desk for the week-end :

Getting started on Snowman Sumo

After my usual period of panicking that I can’t think of something for the theme, I’ve got an idea I really like and have made a small start on it. I’m calling it Snowman Sumo, and you an probably guess what that entails: Roll around, gathering snow to get bigger, then attempt to knock your opponent snowman off this little island.

Snowman Sumo, first screenshot

I’m using Unity, which is madness as I couldn’t make a cube in a 3D editor to save my life. As such, I’ll be making “models” from Unity’s prefabs, giving them very basic textures, and hoping for the best. 😉

All the best to everyone participating!

I’m in… Bordeaux

Yeah yeah, sorry for the late 😉

Ludum Dare, unlike many jams, can be done anywhere you like. So I left Paris to do it in Bordeaux with the Motion Twin guys!

Motion Twin, Bordeaux

My chair is the orange one

I was rather riding on “Snowman” so this whole “Single screen” thing is a bit of a pain in the butt. Ah well 😛

I was also hoping on using Haxe and Heaps, but work was pretty full-on so I didn’t have time to get it working. So it’ll just be Love 2D as usual. Old faithful 😉

Good luck y’all, see you on the other side!

Well, I have an idea, and it’s actually turning out pretty well.early2That’s a screenshot of the test level for my snowman-themed ice-sliding puzzle game. My only worry right now (aside from thinking of the art I’ll have to do) is the work required to make enough levels!
