Pico Factory — Post Compo Ver 1.3

It adds chickens and egg sandwiches, and a bunch of other fixes. Play the Compo version!


The reaction to my little game was much better than I anticipated! Thank you all for your nice comments.

In this new version, I have fixed some of the most common complaints:

  • Controls: Now the X button opens a menu which lets you choose the item to place. You can also overwrite items without using the erase tool if you want to.
  • Balance: No more Bread Machine > All :-) Also, the output machine’s cost increase with each new machine in the world. Use the Conveyor belts!
  • New items: Chickens and Eggs machines
  • Also: A bunch of small fixes and improvements.

I hope you enjoy it! I’ll try to keep working on this game a little bit every weekend until I clear through my TODO list. Suggestions regarding the balance are highly appreciated. And as always, if you got a high score, send me the screenshot!

So I added two more buildings to my game, some sound effects, and I’m calling it in for this LD.

I tried making some music, but I suck at it. The game is already noisy enough with the factory’s sound effects.

The only thing that worries me is that Game submission is not working, and the LD deadline tomorrow is just when I am waking up and rushing for work :-(

This time, I’m trying out PICO8, a micro fantasy console.

For “one room”, the idea I’m coming up with is a “Factorio” clone.

Probably will limit it by time, and challenge the player to see how much money he can make in X minutes.

Interface will be a problem.

Made some very primitive canoe AI. It just randomly paddles around while throwing spears everywhere. Also, the game now has an actual win state, so I think it can officially be called a “game” now!

Now I’m gonna try improving the canoe AI. After that, I’ll probably do a simple title screen to pick modes and the number of players.

The two ancient technologies, spears and canoes, have finally been brought together! With their powers combined, you will be unstoppable! Now I just need to give you something to throw them at…

Also, I got a solid 8 hours of sleep, so I’m feeling pretty good. 21 hours left to finish this game and everything’s still on-track.

Canoe paddles around with paddle animation

Canoe controls are feeling pretty good, and I’m pretty satisfied with the animation. Still not sure I like the paddle color. Might change it to black or white. Here’s the PICO-8 pallete if anyone has thoughts on the matter:

I took a break for a couple hours, and now I’m gonna make a sandwich. Will also try to get some sleep in the next few hours. Zero stress at this point, and feeling pretty confident that I’ll have a decent game by the end.

Next task is to weaponize the canoe, and then start putting in some opponents!

First time using PICO-8. Got a canoe that can paddle around and collide with rocks.

Next step is adding some animations for paddling, then time to start adding the other ancient technology: spears!
