I’m going to play LD games today! Yes, I’ll play games made by YOU! You can suggest a game for me to play, even yours, and I’ll give instant feedback (Sorry, English is not my native language, I doubt I’ll be able to speak so you understand).

Live “Speed Music Composing” Stream for Game Jam

Posted by (twitter: @theshawz)
Wednesday, April 24th, 2013 4:18 pm

Hey folks,

This is Gregg O’Donnell, an audio engineer and producer for Insurmountable Sounds.  I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone, Hello World!

I would like to officially like to state my intent to participate in the game jam for LD #26.  I will be working with Nurbs on this particular project.

This weekend I shall be speed composing on my home computer.  It’s going to be approximately for 8 hours.  The way it’s going to work is the stream will be piano tracks written from scratch, on the computer via mouse and piano roll.

The best fitting pieces of music will be picked after the initial stream and be produced/mixed to the best possible quality given the time limit.  If you don’t know much about music, I think it would be really fun to watch as you get to watch the thought process behind composing music behind a computer.

My livestream is going to be hosted at

I really hope people will tune in and see how much raw music I can churn out in 8 hours.  Hopefully I can create about 5-7 rough songs.

If you want to see some of my past material, here are a couple of links.  –  I did the music and audio edit for this short  –  A fun little video I shot a long time ago, just to show my love for video games 😉

this will be my first time entering the Ludum Dare Compo and i am pretty sure it will be a challenge for me concerning the limited time frame ^^.

I will also livestream the full experience as an marathon with 45minutes naps (hell yeah!) and a lot of Coke.

Good luck to all competitors i hope you guys enjoy it and create awesome games ^_^

The tools and equipment I will use:

  • Engine/Framework: LibGDX, Java
  • IDE: IntelliJ
  • Graphics: PS CS6 (+Wacom Tablet)
  • Sound: SFXR
  • Music: Ableton Live 8(+MIDI-keyboard) [if I have enough time]

Relax Stream going live soon

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012 3:53 pm

Please join me today on my stream at 6 pm PST (-8 GMT) on 12/18/2012 (about three hours from now).

I will play your Ludum Dare game or one requested, just as I did during previous relax streams.

It’s that time again. Join me on my stream at 6 pm PST (-8 GMT) on 12/18/2012 on Tuesday because
I WILL PLAY YOUR LD25 GAME just as I did during the previous relax streams.

What an experience. I told my brother we should put our hair on the line because we both felt this Ludum Dare was different from the previous ones. It was worth it. We have our hair, and this game is fun. This is what we hoped for.

After a long discussion when the the theme was announced, Double DeConstruction become a game I really wanted to play. Originally it was about a bulldozer on a rampage. The rule of never go with the first thing that pops in your head worked well because my second concept was better. I thought, what about a construction worker with a laser arm (like Samus Aran from Metroid) that shoots wrenches.

What went right:

  • Organized very well
  • Pace of progress was steady

What went wrong:

  • I learned too late how well two editing programs work together. I learned something very valuable.

Edit: If you cannot make my stream and you want your game played, request it via Twitch message or E-mail me.

You’re the King – What is the player motivation?

Here I’m with another update. So far the essential stuff works. Essential that is all resource gathering and the death of the whole population if there is no food. However this brings me to a more fundamental issue regarding the core concept of the game, or what is the motivation for the player.

The initial design was that the player becomes the villain by his own actions in order to win the game. Now I’m having a hard time integrating this concept into the game in a meaningful way. The original win condition was to reach a certain population amount. But how do we turn the player into a villain by doing so? Simply forcing the workers to work all the time in order to provide enough food for the whole population seems too simply and boring. Hopefully I can come up with a good idea in the remaining hours.

Here are some new screenshots to keep you entertained :)

This time I will be participating in the Jam for the fourth time, not with Carduus as usual, but with a bunch of old friends :)

Blog, livestream and stuff

We will use this blog to post our detailed progress, and we will post here as well for important updates as we go along.
For those interested, we will have a livestream running, with multiple cams, screens and all that silly stuff 😉

Here is what we will most likely be using…

To make code:

The wonderful Haxe language, the excellent FlashDevelop IDE and GitHub. Grmpf and I will handle this part.

To make art:

A Wacom Intuos 2 A3 tablet and some kind of image editor, or maybe paper, ink, watercolor and a scanner 😉 noc. will be the guy behind all this.

To make music:

A bunch of Android devices and a Guitar Hero drum set as MIDI controllers, and possibly real instruments as well. Capt. CAPSLOCK will manage this part…

Good luck everyone! :)

We can’t wait to get started! Have fun and good luck to everyone! 😀

Woken up and ready for a fresh start /w streaming!
