This will be my second ludum dare compo entry. Gonna try to aim for a simpler game this time so I’ll hopefully get some time to spend on background music and sound effects.

I’m in for LD38 – Round Two

I’m planning to try again for LD 38, likely for the Jam instead of Compo.

My first Ludum Dare was LD 37, where I tried the jam by myself and music from my brother. However, things didn’t end quite so well, as I wasn’t able to get function version to distribute by the end of the 72 hours. After the event, I did at least resolve the major bugs into the version you can find here on my There is not much substance to the game, but it’s something I made in four-days time so that’s one step at least.

Pre-Event Thoughts

One thing I learned from the last event was to improve my time management. I ran short on time to get a functional game. I spent too much time with small details that ended up not being used in my rush to finish the game in some form where people could at minimum click the button. Ludum Dare 37 was my second project using libGDX and my first project using Ashley for entities and Box2D for physics. I learned a lot, especially using some other open-source projects to get some general ideas and guidelines.

With LD 38 coming up, I’m hoping to get a more complete, more enjoyable game than my LD 37. I will have less time than before due to work, but I’ll still have a decent amount of time. I want to create something minimally substantial, preferably an idea that I would want to go back to later and continue.

I’ll use Java and the libGDX game framework.
I will probably use Ashley as an entity-component management system.
I will probably use Box2D for any physics/collisions.
For sounds, I’ll use sfxr/bfxr.
Music I will either create using musagi.
Art will be created using

Joy of our first games ever !

Yesterday, we had our first preparatory workshop for LD 38 : 2 hours to learn how to make a game with construct 2 (for beginners). We were 11, from very different backgrounds (ranging from a 14 year old kid and his mother, to students in development, or some graphic designers). Just look how pleased they looked, when after 50′ their first game ever came to life :

Joy of his first game created ever

Joy of his first game created ever

I can’t wait to see what will come out from 48 hours production !

We have got 4 more workshops to go : discovering our local Fablab, graphics in video games, creating a point & click with adventure game studio, and finally, musics and sounds in video games. Those workshops are free, and open to everyone. And there still are some seats available 😉

My 8th Ludum Dare, coming right up! I just moved and everything in my life is a bit of a mess as a result, but Ludum Dare waits for no man.

My Ludum Dare toolchain is forever new and yet always the same:

  • Unity 5 with Visual Studio,
  • Photoshop for graphics,
  • ChipTone for sound effects,
  • REAPER, and my iPad with sundry apps, for music. I have a beefier home recording setup now, but think I’ll keep it simple as always.

Undetermined as to whether I’ll be aiming for the Jam or Compo. I have a commitment of a few hours on Sunday afternoon, but that hasn’t stopped me before.

Let’s do this, friends!

Hi everyone!

Rosa & I are organising a meetup for Ludum Dare 38 at Newspeak House in London.

If you’re in or around London on the Ludum Dare weekend, come jam with us!

Newspeak House

What is Newspeak House?
Newspeak House is a hackspace for politics. Started by Edward Saperia, it is a hub for people who believe that technology has the power to improve society.

We will be jamming in their communal space, a spacious and bright room on the ground floor of the building and a stone-throw away from Shoreditch High Street. If the weather is nice, we can also make use of their terrace.

There will be:

Lightning fast internet speeds
24 hour access
Free food and drink
Optional self-care activites
Tables and chairs

What to bring:

A laptop and charger
Pens, paper, whiteboards – what you need to get creative
A sleeping bag and a pillow
A matt or blow-up mattress

Please sign up on the EventBrite at

Money from ticket sales will all go towards providing free food and drink. If you are a student or unemployed and cannot afford a ticket, contact Rosa at r.carbomascarell (at) gmail (dot) com or tweet at her on @moreelen.

Hope to see you there!

I was at GDC this past week and learned a lot about an interesting engine called DeFold, It’s focused on 2D games, and has a lot of features that seem like a natural fit for gamejams:
– small foot print
– fast performance
– runs on HTML5, OSX, Windows, Linux, even iOS and Android
– Hot reloading (replace assets while game is running.)
– Tile editor
– Particle editor
– GUI editor
– Spine support (
– Lua Scripting
– Built in editor and debugger, but you can use other IDEs.

I’m going to learn as much as I can by April and try it out for LD38. Does anyone have any experience using it? Any tips or great tutorials I should check out?

See you in April!

Hello everyone, my name is Lothrinn, I’m from France and this will be my first Ludum Dare ! I know it is a little bit early to register for this one but anyway 😛

On this one, I will work alone and I know it will be extremely difficult as it’s my first LD and my very first event of this genre ! I started coding very recently (2 months ago) and I’m slowly learning C#, working with Unity. I’m actually in university majoring Art, intending to enter in another uni specialized in videogames developement.

I know as it’s my first LD I might not be able to finish my game in time or erasing the biggest bugs but who cares ? I’m here only to have fun, to discover my limits and to learn from my mistakes ! I’d also love to see the awesome work you all will realize ! I strongly believe this event will be really interesting and will help me to progress.

Of course, I’m participating at the Jam, the Compo would be too hardcore for me 😛 I may even stream my progression during the whole event !

So, see you all in April and good luck !

PS : Oh, I almost forgot : I’M IN !

PPS : I apologize for my poor english, I’m trying my best :p

This is my fifth Ludu Dare and I have come a LONG way since starting off at my first. Since I am going away on the Saturday, I am willing to work with another developer’ I use Unity or Game Maker (8 or Studio) and I am a pixel artist. I am also a sound designer when I have to be. Anyone interested?
