Ludum Dare #36 – A Looking Back

I decided to take part on Ludum Dare # 36 just some hours before it begun. Saw the themes being voted and some caught my interest. Happily, Ancient Technology was my favourite.

I was solo and decided to personally only have 48 hours to put something up. Didn’t matter how small it was I wanted it to feel mostly finished or like a good prototype for something else. I knew it had to be small, simple and straight forward, there was no time to waste.

That line of thought pushed me to go late 70’s early 80’s black & white and build something that felt like putting your Atari on and blowing your cartridges and yet they would not function properly. With that said and with an extra metaphor in mind came Artefact-O 36.

SS1

Development went very well for the most part, thought I was way ahead in delivering my project ’till I got stuck in some level design and deciding the best order for the levels…

…and then I decided to go HTML5 so more ludum darers could have access to it. What seemed to be a simple task burnt the last 6 hours of my participation and I ended up submitting at the last minute, by 02:00 AM.

I’m happy with the accomplishment made and will most certainly come back to Artefact-O 36 may it be building upon or starting a new spiritual successor digging deeper into its theme.

We’re back to adventure in the realm of Ancient Technology with Ludum Dare 36! Featuring Museum Employee that think on his feet, an ancient sleeping magical machine, and a Dwarf who must escape from an Orcish prison complex.

What happened to the rating system?

Posted by

Hey there,

So this year i made a preeeeetty bad game (Here is the link btw: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-36/?action=preview&uid=49998)

so i expected to see some soul crushing ratings and some comments. Then i noticed that only one person actually commented on my game (the other one was a friend of mine).

At first i was confused but then i realised it: The rating system disapeared!

I have no idea why it is gone but i know that i want it back. It made LD special to me because i could see how good my game idea was and where i could improve. But now it is gone and nobody plays other games because there is nothing to do. It has no meaning.

My question is: Why did it get removed?

Also: Could we get it back please?

My is Game Live :

http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-36/?action=preview&uid=44680

Candle Dungeons is a game where you explore treasure Dungeons with your trusty candle. You have 15 seconds with each wick, collect Yellow Coal cubes to extend you light time. How much time of light you have left is displayed next to the player. Each coal provides 15 more seconds of light. Use the arrow keys to move , Space to jump, and ENTER key to open doors. Doors could only be used once. Also this game is in need of a post combo update which I will do tomorrow. Right now this game has only one level, and no Menu screen, no enemies. But don’t worry, I’ll include those in the update tomorrow. So drop by again tomorrow to see whats new.

We’re done!

This was a bit of a test-LD for our team to see what we could make without much coding knowledge. The result was a little block breaker game that our 3D-artist-turned-programmer put together. It may not be a ground-breaking game but I think it turned out pretty fun. I hope some of you too will enjoy this little tale about a jealous potter called Sutakh who once found an ancient rock!

You can find it here. Will fix the links as soon as I can (I really need to sleep now).

Finally done!

Alright so we finished our game in a playable state. For a while there we didnt think we would make it doing a multiplayer game and all was trickier then expected…

Play it now!

After narrowing down several ideas I decided to go with Egyptian technology – i.e Vehicles. I am creating a game using voxel art for the first time for ludum dare 36. I have a prototype level and player.

Progress So Far

Alright so my first plan was a kind of laziness game so to speak with the main character being a slave in the Egyptian times and being forced to build a pyramid. but whenever the ‘enemy’ wasn’t watching, you would basically slack off and earn points. but as I developed the character I realized two things. one, I have no idea on an actual AI system yet and two, the character looks nothing like a slave. So, now I have no idea what I’ll end up making but at least have the characters idle and walking sprites finished and a couple of tiles that might end up working for some kind of pyramid anyway.SlaveSheet

Engine Extensions: Node system, Terminal, Texture tools, Chrome Shaders and light systems – All these extensions have been made by the team coder

Game main Theme: Ancient technology

Game Themes: Mystic, adventure, fiction, mindfuck

Game Genre: Horror

Team: TurretBox

  •  Team Co Leader, CptNaughty

  •  Feedback is apriciated

  •  If anyone wishes to join the team and prove their worth we are more then willing to take extra help.

Running this one solo. Going to be using C# and Unity as I am most familiar with those and don’t have a team.
