Most people have commented about how difficult it is to play my game.

For those who have no idea what is it about, I’ve just added a gameplay video of my Ludum Dare 33 compo entry, My Cup of Fury.

Overview

This time around I tried something else. Historically my plan has always been to come up with an ambitious programming heavy design and get it done (with varying results). This time the theme didn’t inspire any kind of grand design so I decided to take a walk on the other side.

The very opposite side, where few programmers dare to venture..

Graphics first!

24 hours later I had created a single asset, the mech.

To do this I had to relearn my rusty Blender skills (they’d been rusting ever since last LD) and apply a hefty amount of new found graphic artist abilities on top of that:

Modelling, rigging, inverse kinematics, animating, texturing, the list goes on (no it doesn’t, but that sound more dramatic!).

The rest (not sleep, unfortunately [as you’ll soon see {foreshadowing!}])

With only one day left for programming (and modelling other assets) there was no chance to both reach for the moon and cook up a delicious pie from the sky masterpiece.

I settled for a simple design about the player, piloting a mech, attacking a non-military target thus triggering nearby militia to action.

I did come up with some further backstory in the darkest hours of my plight development process, but implementing any of that fell soundly beyond achievable limits, as did sound to that matter.

Impact (on body and soul)

Monday I got sick. I would wager a very pretty penny that this was caused by not sleeping enough thus disturbing the immune defense system from doing its job. This is the first time for me, so maybe I’m just becoming older. Nonetheless, next time there will be more naps.

The future

The cut features will be implemented in a Post Jam version. I have one additional learning opportunity to pursue, but the less I say about that the better. It might not work out.

Lessons learned

  • Sleep a bit more
  • Learning is great, but learning the tools sould be done before the jam

The next LD will be about over ambitious ideas again. It’s been a while…

PISSED

I just fixed some bugs for my game (score not resetting, bad colliders, etc). Check out My Cup of Fury!

I am sorry if playing it is a painful experience.

Just in case if you’re playing the HTML5 (WebGL) build on itch.io, your keyboard controls won’t work once the game is done loading. You need to “activate” the area where the game is embedded by clicking on the “Unity WebGL” logo first or anywhere around there, then click on the game’s screen itself. Now you’ll be able to move around with the keyboard.

About to finish…

We’re about to finish our game! This has been an awesome experience and we will repeat for sure.

After 72 hours of programming, composing, drawing, animating…all we can do is smile when we see the final result. We could finish what we expected on time, and this gave us a lot of good feelings! We are just taking the last decisions and fixing some little bugs we found, and we think that is great!

In a few moments we will post the link of the game that will be playable from the web browser.

Almost done, time for features, sounds and more

Here is it, we’ve done all mains feature and finished the dynamic lights rendering engine (with an existing experimental library).

Right now this is a preview of the game:
screen-dev-3
For those who are curious, we use PIXI.js with the experimental lights library which was hard to include in my engine (it is the dream engine with pixi inside + lights now).
https://github.com/pixijs/pixi-lights

Also planning to push all the source on github then all of you will be able to check it out !

We won’t be able to create dynamic shadows because it’s take long time to make this work, and we have sounds and music to put in + more features (yes we are issuing GD fails, so we are looking for more interesting way to play, objectives, and adding fun).

Anyway code is ready, level-design almost, and arts almost, time to use nitro.

Good luck to all jamers.

Looking for a game to play this evening? Immerse yourself, by putting on your headphones, downloading and playing The Cure.

Something has happened to you! You need to find all 10 of the scientists before you turn into a monster! Don’t eat the villagers or you will become more like a monster. But eating sheep helps keep the monstrous nature at bay. Feel free to chat to the villagers, the might help brighten the mood.

My Experience

2nd time in, and how much fun! Really enjoyed programming this guy. I was surprised how much more progress I have made in how I would problem solve my code and write different algorithms. I feel that my art has also improved since the last four months with my Ludum Dare 32 entry. But that’s just how I feel. Let me know your honest opinion, I am keen to make improvement.

Game Mechanics and stuff.

If I were to add more to this game I would like more scenery objects, perhaps more animals. I think also a secondary objective would make it more fun. I really like the mechanic were the you can’t control the monster. I feel it adds to the experience. It wasn’t planned out, but it turned out to be pretty good. I also like the text interaction between the NPCs. I haven’t done this before, but was happy with the outcome.

Overall, I am glad I did the Ludum Dare Compo again. It is helping me improve my developing skills, helping me see I can finish a game, all while having fun! Until Ludum Dare 34 fellow developers!

I can smell you fear. You can run and you can hide but I will find you.

This is my first Ludum Dare submission. You play as a monster that sees with sound and smell the fear of his prey. Try to kill all the humans before sunrise at 6:00.

Download the Game and test it out: Game Download

Don’t forget to vote on it once your done and comment how many humans you killed.
