The last hours of working almost killed me. Even if there’s another hour for the compo, for me it’s 2AM and I’m really tired.

I finished my first Ludum Dare

So I was ready to just leave what I had in posts and say I couldn’t finish, but my fellow AGDG’rs kicked my butt and said I was crazy because I still had 12 hours left. I decided to not sleep that night and just make the game presentable. Cutting the features I wanted to put in and making the game winnable/losable. The result is this: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-25/?action=preview&uid=17759

The Fall and Rise of Rome: Patient 0 A.D.

screenshot01

You are the first zombie. JESUS CHRIST. That’s not an exclamation of surprise, I mean Jesus Christ was the first man to rise from the dead. This is the origin of his rampage that led to The Fall (and eventual rise, like from the dead) of Rome.

What I learned: I was more prepared than I would have been if I didn’t sit down and work on my framework. I was less prepared than I needed to be in terms of looking to implement simple things that should have worked off the bat. The timing in my engine was flawed and it affected everything. The game doesn’t run at consistent speeds and one bug in particular cost me 5-7 hours just trying to fix, breaking my engine to a point where I was worse off, spent more time on 2 attempts just trying to get back to having One bug, and then just decided to cut the amount of times the bug occurs in half by making there only one way to kill a bad guy.

Cutting features was the compromise and saving grace of meeting the deadline. While I fully appreciate GLBasic, I didn’t know it well enough and it cost me. I will have to get some more experience with it. I literally used it for a short time back in 2011, bought a license, spent a week on this framework and then stopped for some unknown reason. I picked it up again 2 weeks ago, patching in physics, listeners, etc… I think next time I have time to do this… until I’m more experienced with coding, I may relax and Jam, providing my art skills to an online team or something. I know for sure, my lack of experience in cost me dev time as well as art asset time. I could’ve at the very least made this one-level intro more beautiful. Maybe I’ll go for Unity next time as that’s what I’ve been using a lot of lately.

As usual I uploaded random check ins to my Youtube playlist. Also planning on putting up a timelapse of every waking moment after I get it together into a video.

It’s finished!

Noir Game is finished, with soundtrack everything working! You can play it already!

Just to note, my animation was made using the Pyganim module, since I used Pygame for the entire project (and the awesome Sublime Text 2! Really, you should try it!)

Wrote up a blogpost on my progress and with a couple of screenshots on my blog.
There is a bonus added into one of the screenshots, curious to see how many people will find it.:)

As always LD was awesome. I just wish I had more time, this time. Look forward to seeing all the submissions. Click here to read my post.

Here are the screenshots so I can earn my goat badge:))

That one bug!

So I spent about 5-7 hours on one animation bug, which I still haven’t fixed. :O At one point during those hours I actually almost rendered the engine unfix-able and surprisingly worse off than it was before, haha. Those hours could’ve been spent working on the other mandatory necromancy mechanic, and actually creating the level, but now it looks like it’s not going to happen. The framework is fundamentally flawed for this type of game (and well for pretty much any type of game I suppose hahaha) and I’m starting to remember why I only spent a week on it 4 seasons ago.

So this is what I’m presenting for now.

Alpha versions of an unfinished product: Windows | Mac
The game runs too slow on Mac to be really playable. No idea why.

I’m going to get some sleep. When I awake, I will have about 5 hours to tweak around, but something tells me since I’m back to square 1 after the previous 5 hours, hahaha, so there won’t be much progress anyways. πŸ˜› I’ve learned a lot in my first run with Ludum Dare!

Blender Engine at the first day

In the end I decided give a try to the Blender Game Engine instead of Unity3D and sadly, I regret a little.

I’m learning a lot, but I miss a lot programing in unity than use blender logic bricks, they are usable, but still are very primitive.

But Blender have nice things, like, everything seens so smooth and make shaders with it is wonderful.

Checking in Approx 20 hours.

So woke up today around 12pm. It’s now 4:30pm. I slept around 7am and lost lots of time due to just laying there in bed.

HEYBRO

Checking in. Just looking at the list of things that need to be done to make this game… *gulp* fun… I’m not too confident about meeting the deadline 25 hours from now. I learned a lot so far though. The first is that everything you thought you prepared is broken and needs to be fixed on the fly. :)

I’m regularly uploading random progress on my youtube playlist here. I’m sorry if I talk too fast or too quiet at times. I’ll be uploading my timelapse at the end.

Update #1 – Wow this is going well so far

Heyo heyo heyo.

I’ve made some good progress in the graphical area of my ld entry. Time to outline what the game is going to be πŸ˜€

I’ve dubbed this game “What a World.” I’m not sure why though. You play as an anonymous leader of a group of toughnecks trying to make an impact on the world. In a bad way ;D You’ll be able to choose 3 or 4 people for your crack team in the game. Each will have there strong and weak points so you’ll have to choose wisely.

Once you have your team you will be able to do missions to build up influence in the world and to make your crew better. The missions will probably range in awareness. The more the world starts noticing your deeds the harder it’ll get to do missions.

You win when you conquer the world idk maybe.

It should be a nice little game to play. Also, you get some crazy choices for a crew. I may even make it a random selection.

Here is the crew from top left to bottom right: Diggums, Billie, Bones McCoy, Katz, Brutus, Justin, Domnic, and Vel.

When I wake up I’ll be focusing on the main core gameplay aspects. (Mission handling, random attributes, and globals.)

Goodnight everyone!

How the theme can be THAT sucky ?

Friday, December 14th, 2012 7:40 pm

Dearest friends,

I’m joining my first LD.

It’s gonna be my first solo-made game (except forΒ my mother’s birthday one a month ago (i was drunk for the most part of the creation)).

That theme was the one i hated most in the 48…

I’m french, it’s 3am, i want to cry a little…wait…i just did…

Whatever.

My friend’s doing this too, and we’ll be sharing some of the posts. You’ll find him here : glbs.

I’ll be using :

a pen and my computer (don’t know the details yet).

Love.

I’m not the villian :D

Hey, this is my ludum dare.. In fact, my first game competition.. So, I’m just so excited – I’ve been up all night for this, maybe I should have slept, but either way, I’m still feeling quite fresh and hopefully, I’ll be able to complete this first compo…

I’ll also be uploading timelapse video, updates and workspace pics later…

Currently, I have this idea- You’ll be playing with two characters and ultimately one of them betrays.. And the secret is- you get to choose the betrayer is and you’ll have to play as that character at last. Also, this will be a platformer game with both puzzles and killing.

Game engine: Pygame/Python

Sound: FL Studio, maybe bfxr also.

Graphics: Inbuilt sprite editor of Gamemaker.

No code base to share, I’ll be starting with a blank screen πŸ˜€

Plans to release it as open-source game.

I’m in!

I completed my first LD challenge last August with LD24, and I’m excited to be joining in again. This time I’ll have some interesting time constraints since I will be out of town for most of the competition. I’m going to target web with a 3D Unity game again.

Tools:

  • Unity 3D
  • Blender
  • GIMP
  • FL Studio [mobile]

Here’s my desk setup for this go. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll get to see much of it after tonight. πŸ˜›
