Chilli +2 and finally progress

More chilli! And of course a little update, after spending what felt like a few hours earlier trying to get some stuff working it really didn’t!

However after then changing the way I’d do it, I’ve now got it all working to a certain extent, at least the main portion of the game that ties it to the theme anyway which is great! Now just get it playing like it should tonight, and then tomorrow will be designated purely for art.

For now however you can revel in my placeholder sprites from my past LD games, it’s great to have a library of placeholder items so I can quickly pop stuff together.

I have been having trouble coming up with something but there is this game mechanic I’ve been wanting to use for a while…maybe I can somehow turn it into a game. We will see what I come up with. Anyway, here is breakfast (iced coffee with a muffin:

Not the biggest fan of the theme, there were some on the list that I would have preferred more. Plus with the 10 second theme it felt very close to my game I made for LD26.

Either way I’ve come up with an idea, although slightly annoyed with myself as I ended up preferring a game based around a shooter the most, even though I made one for LD23, and would rather do something a bit different.

Chugging along though, got the base game there, now I just need to add the 10 second-ness and polish to the script as well a life and score system.

Also this LD I’ve finally got my TV hooked up to my pc (not visible in the photo as it’s to the right) which although it’s a bit far away, it’s nice to one again have more monitor space!

In the mean time here is some chilli (turkey based), it was my lunch, it will also be my dinner, and my next lunch as well as dinner again, and I presume food for the next few days on as there’s TONS of it :)


Also need to start thinking of what kind of visual style I want, art won’t really start until tomorrow but I suppose I should think of what it could look like.

So finally we define the idea.

To develop the idea, we started a brainstorm where each one suggested a freely thought , without any questioning of the other participants. It could be a reference, or a scene, or a game, or the first thing that came to mind when thinking on the subject. Then the group sit down to discuss everything we thought, without regard to our limitations.

Then reduce everything to the simplest game we could think of.

Now it’s time to start creating a game.

Below is a fairly accurate account of how my weekend went while making F*** This Job

Day One

0830 Got up, had porridge and a cuppa, got dressed
0900 “Minimalism? Bugger.”
0930 Lots of Googling, etc. “Minimalism…Do more with less”
1000 “I’ll make a one-button roguelike!”
1030 “Screw that.” Decided on a one-button platformer instead
1100 Drew complicated sketch of how the game will play

1130 Guy is now running and jumping back-and forth
1230 Basic level loading and tiling done
1300 Wife asks what happens if you hold down the jump key. Turns out the guy starts flying. I assure her it’s a feature…Not a bug
1400 Added spikes and player deaths
1500 Went to ‘Burger Off’ to refuel

1730 Back to work, added the stegosaurus thingy which would later become the mutant rat enemy
1830 Added exits – levels now have a start and an end!
1900 More enemies that look nothing like they’re supposed to (except the gun turret…That sort of looks like a gun turret)
2100 “It would be awesome if I could add Super Meat Boy-style replays…”

0000 Somehow added Super Meat Boy-style replays

0200 More enemies, tile types and general bug fixing. Added just about all the mechanics and elements so I can focus on polish and level design tomorrow

Day Two

0830 …SNOOZE…
1030 “Oh **** it’s still Ludum Dare!”
1100 Fixing up the main menu and level select screen
1200 Found my dusty Wacom tablet…Time to make an intro
1400 Finished the intro and outro. His fingers look weird but whatever
1500 Designed a few tutorial levels
1530 Ran out of bacon, went to the shops
1630 More levels, bug fixing the replays
1930 Redid a lot of the art for the enemies, spent ages trying to make a decent run animation in 3×3 pixels (didn’t work – he looks like he’s moonwalking)
2200 Added sounds – thank you AS3FXR!
2230 Added a poster to the intro and main menu (bonus points if you recognise it)
2300 Home stretch! More levels
0100 So many ideas for levels but they take *ages* to tweak and get right! Oh well, 24 will do for now
0130 Compiled and submitted
0200 Final tweaks and fixes… Need to get up for work in 5.5 hours, better go to bed

My supportive and awesome wife just brought me second breakfast.

X10 hosting doesn’t allow remote mysql, which sucks. I may just rewrite things and use standard post to send the high scores.

Any other suggested hosts for MySQL? I’d love to have remote access.

Sadly, our sound person is no longer available this weekend. If we can’t find a replacement we’ll have to resort to autogenerating some music or something, and that seems sub-optimal. I’ve been busy the whole day coding the game, so I’m posting today’s food photos before going to sleep.

Lunch (was actually a breakfast :): Turkey stew in cream sauce with dumplings (made by my übercool soon-to-be father-in-law)
