So as well as this being our first Ludum dare we’re also very new to making video games so this jam was a brand new challenge for us! But it’s been a blast playing all the insane games that came from this dare, and its been awesome to read the comments you guys have given us for our game BLODAU.

This is a rad community and we can’t wait until the next jam!! So to show our love I’ve made ya’ll a little gif of our game’s character :)

aahh sweet release! Just uploaded our game :) this was our first ever games jam, what a trip! dreasic sleep deprivation, starvation and savage arguments, all to make a thing shoot another thing! we’d do it all over again in a heartbeat though!

We had more in mind for our game but got snagged on a few of the mechanics and lost way too much time… but we’re please with what we have, and I’m relatively sure it all works!

So we’re 12 hours in, pretty much flat out! Slightly melty brains but having a blast so far!

While our programer is locking down mechanics I’d thought I’d share our main character and its enemy :)

2.5D Metroidvania inspired by Bloodborne!? #LDJAM

I’m Adam Thompson AKA @EmotionTheory and I’m in!

I’ll be participating in the Jam since I’ve lost a bit of time, and since I appreciate the more lax approach it takes.

flow

I love Metroidvania games – who doesn’t? – and have been wanting to make one for some time now, so I’m taking this chance to do just that!

I’ll be using Unity 5.0 & ProBuilder (I’m putting off learning some Blender yet again), and Photoshop for 2D stuff.

The idea

From brainstorming:

  • An underwater metroidvania with free 2D movement ala Aquaria
  • Basic controls of moving & dashing
  • Abstract character art as seen in @thatgamecompany‘s Flow
  • Silhouette / flat shaded environment elements
  • Bloodborne inspired map layout! Checkpoints (anemonies, you can fast travel between each), unlocking shortcuts, non-linear design (I’ve got a map drafted)
  • A handful of interactive elements; mines, blowfish, currents, etc
  • A handful of collectibles; starfish? Heh.

This might sound like a lot is going on, but I absolutely want to simplify *everything*. I’d like to prototype the absolute core elements of a metroidvania game and truly explore what I find magical about the metroidvania structure.

As such, there is no real *combat*. There will be dangers you must avoid like in VVVVVV, and the challenging Bloodborne inspired checkpoint and map system will encourage players to explore and locate shortcuts.

TODO

Here’s my todo list, ordered by priority

  1. Get player controls (arrows, analog, mouse) + camera follow working – Left click to move + right click to dash (also keyboard + gamepad controls)
  2. Create sandbox environment – greybox playground
  3. Create checkpoint (anemones) + fast travel system
  4. Construct map layout (very very basic – entirely seamless)
  5. Create + add in walls (shortcuts) that can be opened up
  6. Create + add in collectible starfish prefab
  7. Create + add in challenge elements
    1. explosive mine prefab – static + moving variant
    2. ???
  8. Create “underwater feel”
    1. background colour gradient
    2. particle effects – bubbles, light rays
    3. color tint effect
    4. wave effect
  9. Make some additional art
    1. generic background rocks
    2. some plants + stickers
    3. ambient fish

I’ll admit this sounds like a heck of a lot to do – but for a prototype I’d be happy if I simply get a character moving in a non-linear world with checkpoints and fast travel.

That’s my goal!

Jackie and the BS

My first LD entry, for the #7 compo in December 2005.

Story, according to readme.txt:

You’re kidding right? Uhm… Control
Jackie as she tries to escape from her
sugar-induced nightmare by climbing an
ever-growing flower. Flying pigs are
attacking and she needs to feed them
candy until they burst.

Collect delicious pig eggs for score,
and keep a look-out for hearts to boost
your health should you need it.

What more is there to say? You jump around, throw candy, collect eggs and try not to fall into the water as platforms appear and disappear from the randomly growing flower. The flower itself was the most advanced piece of code in this one, and the first thing I started working on. Generally I seem to go about LD compos that way – think of some cool technical concept, then implement it and try to turn it into a retro platformer somehow…

Download, WIN32 binary+src: jackiebs.zip (1.24 MB)

Just starting out, no platforms have grown out yet.

Flower has grown a fair bit and there are tons of platforms.

Yoz

White pig has eaten too much candy, burst is imminent.
