I will remake the fish model later but for now I want the gameplay done :) Oh and I want random colors.

Go and play

This is the result, made by one single person. I would like to add more puzzles, would you like to have more thinking-puzzles, or adding a deeper meta-game, like the fish (player) is an AI and the whole game is running as it was a simulation inside a computer, so it can learn and when you finish the training you let it free in the real world where it can posses a robot-fish and swim and help animals and protect nature?

Fish Fencing

The fine sport of fish fencing dates back to the early 1800s. In the traditional ruleset, you must jab your opponent off the arena, using only the fish in your hand. If you are disarmed by your opponent’s parry, you will need to avoid him while you fish for a new weapon. Better hope you catch a big one!

This is the first game jam that I may conceivably finish. My partner and I have never used Unity before, but we are really enjoying it. However we’ve definitely spent a lot of time running into some walls due to lack of skill. We’re both web developers during the day, but making games is another beast.

The “art” is really tragic, we kind of cheated on this and are using woodcut style images from Google images. Yeesh. Better than the programmer art that we’d otherwise make I guess.

We set it up with gamepads in mind, and the controls actually feel pretty good. Major to-dos are getting the “stab” motion right so it has enough “oomph” behind it, and completing the fishing aspect. Sound and music would be nice but we are clueless in that arena as well, so *shrug*. Anyways, about 27 (?) hours left right?

You can watch us develop live, if you want to watch the trainwreck unfold:

Almost done. Added sound effects—a ding when you hit walls (me flicking a glass, pitch-shifted) and a little chord when you hit a target (GarageBand’s grand piano). Also added something simple and dumb that I’m disproportionately pleased with: the end screen picks a random compliment for you.

Go, fish

Got the art and things from the last post added to the actual game; also tweaked the physics to be a bit speedier. Gameplay-wise I think the only thing I still want to add is an end-game state (right now you still just bounce off the floor) and maybe a “streak” bonus where you get additional points if you’ve hit a ring every time you’ve anchored. From there: sounds (splat when hitting walls, ding when hitting targets), particle effects (if I have time), and then this is good to go.

She’s got moves.

For now, I have drinking to do. ¡Hasta mañana!

14 hours may be enough (to make chips)

Worst timing ever, this LD, I’ll only be having about 14 hours time on Sunday. Can’t we postpone it? No? Why not? Am I not the most important thing in the universe? No? Damn.

14 hours should be enough for something, though. I’m in.
It’s include a [pəˈtātō] / [pəˈtātə]. I don’t care how it’s pronounced as long as you can make chips from it (yes, those that come with fish, which you may or may not have to fish yourself).

Tools: Unity3D, C#, a kitchen knife, a sack of potatoes, frying pan, salt, vinegar …wait is that still a recipe for a game?

Good luck everyone!

I’ve pushed myself for all there is today.

I’m pushing myself pretty hard on this game. It’s worn me out tonight. No amount of coffee can keep me focused. I’ll take a nap and start back in the early hours of the morning. The game is progressing wonderfully, though. I just need to add all the cool features I planned out last night. And seriously drive it home tomorrow.

Thank you Ludum Dare, for making me believe I can go further, push harder, and make something great. It’s not over, and tomorrow will be so much work. But I’m ready. I’ve been here for almost two years, making games in a seemingly impossible amount of time. And I get better each time. So it will be with this one. But for now…my eyes can’t focus, my calculations can’t calculate, and my body just wants a while to rest. See you in the morning!

I’ve Gotta Stop Playing with These FISH!

They aren’t even what I’m planning to put in the game. These fish are placeholders based on a simple scribble.

It took me way too much time to figure out how to select an isometric tile with the mouse coordinates. Thanks charlie for the suggested reading, I must have read a half-dozen tutorials and it looks like I do iso differently than half of the people who wrote articles. Sines, cosines? What? The math turned out to be pretty simple, and then I had to align the odd alternate tile because the mouse was only picking one half of the map. Grr. It’s working fine now, everything can be selected intuitively. Gameplay will be next, and finish the control scheme/creature attributes. That should be easy.

So, here I am, playing with fish, wasting valuable time. I got frustrated, and I’ll get over it. This game is going to rock! And there’s a little more than one day left to complete it. I can do this. Just hit a roadblock, it’s behind me.

it’s noon here so i decided to whip up some breakfast.

I baked bacon and eggs with cheese on top to make these adorable breakfast puffs. We also have the most professional plates. Okay? Okay.

And breakfast for Machiavelli too!

Hope everyone is doing okay! I have some backgrounds to color.

Ludum Dare #1, theme Guardian. My game, Trout!. Trout! is a game where you the blue fish must rescue the orange fish. Well… assuming they were in peril. Being the first LD48, I still hadn’t got used to how to best work in 48 hours. The game lacked scenery collision, making it no actual challenge at all. Beware the hook though. :)

The game scored Bronze in the graphics category.
