I had a lot of fun picking out my favorite games last time, so I’ve done it again. They are still broken up into categories that I think each game excels at. I’ll be interested to see how highly these games rank against all of the entries.

Ludum Dare 31 Favourites So Far!

Posted by (twitter: @gamepopper)

So after rating 100 games for Ludum Dare, I thought I’d talk a bit about a few of my favourites from the compo/jam. They may not be the best out of the competition, but these were the ones that I find have an aspect of good entries that each of these succeed at.

Tightrope Theatre

This is the entry done by brilliant flash game developer Jussi Simpanen, aka AdventureIslands. He always does games for jams big and small and his entries usually bring a quirky design and incredible polish to them, and this one is no exception. In Tightrope Theatre you must travel from A to B, all while riding a unicycle avoiding fire, spikes and the ground below. The entire game is 24 levels long, and feels very complete for a game done in two days, although you kind of wish there was more. Knowing that Jussi tends to add new stuff to his entries every now and then, maybe there will be more to this entry.

Jumping ‘n Jumping

This is an example of how you should achieve a innovative gameplay in 48 hours, you use one mechanic with a unique spin and give it as much potential as you can. In this case, the mechanic of the game is jumping, and the unique spin is that your jumps are limited, but will increase depending on how you play. Eduardo uses the mechanic in a room where you have to jump to survive and you get this gem.

Screen Mover

Most game jams have a theme, and as a developer you are free to interpret that theme to whatever for your game: you can use a literal route (in LD31, that would mean literally running the entire game on one screen), the metaphorical route or the technical route. With Screen Mover, Sh1rogane decided to go beyond literal and technical with the theme to produce something that may look like a simple platform prototype, until you quickly realise you have to move the game window to progress. The only issue with this idea is that keyboard input it locked while the window moves, but the post jam version does fix this.

The Hyperbeam

Sometimes you don’t have to make a game that’s fun to make it a good entry, you can tell a story, show off some great music or in this case, make some really beautiful graphics. The puzzle game elements are clever, but this game is really good at showing off bloom and neon. It just makes it look wonderful, and the music is really soothing as well. As you may tell from my entry, I love neon glow, and this game does a great job at showing it off.

Swotch

If all else fails, just make a game that is fun to play, and make it addictive for an added bonus. This game’s style reminds me a lot of Terry Cavanagh’s Super Hexagon, and since the developer is planning an Android/iOS release, I recommend him get Chipzel to do music for the game.

Don’t forget to play my entry Glow Drop if you haven’t already.

And though I don’t think my game stacks up to these amazing games, it would mean a lot to me if you checked it out.

Five Amazing LD#28 Games You Totally Need to Check Out

Looking for some awesome games to play and rate? Here’s a collection of a few hidden gems I’ve run into that are absolutely brilliant!

1:   You can become only one!!1 – by multikorv

Link: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=8028

In addition to being an absolutely brilliant concept, this is a shining example of how edutainment/learning games can be fun. If expanded upon, this has the potential to be a fantastic way to teach problem solving and math skills. I would totally drop money on a full version with a level editor/sharable custom levels. The game has a brilliantly paced tutorial and punchy, crisp controls. The way the player accelerates through gates feels so well polished, and the background beat keeps you in the action!

2. Wraith – by AgentParsec

Link: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=12468

The atmosphere this game creates is simply unreal, and chilling. I was on the edge of my seat while playing the entire time. The textures are a bit on the simplistic side, but do not detract from the distilled, raw feelings the maze elicits. It grips you, and doesn’t let go. It also supports the Oculus Rift, if you have nerves of fricking steel, which is another fantastic touch.

3. Solid Heart – by Dustedge

Link: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=15151

The game is built upon a very solid mechanic and presents an interesting twist on the action-puzzler genre. There’s a lot of subtle visual polish as well as some challenging level design, which explores the variety of dimensions the “bouncing core” mechanic has to offer. My only complaint would be the slightly slippery physics. There is a lot of potential here for an awesome title with a bit more visual and audio polish. Overall, a solid prototype!

4. John Power – by Anoarith

Link: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=24843

A well-executed, refreshing take on the “you can only have one power”-style entries. Where John Power succeeds is, in a word, diversity. There are a large variety of powers in the game, but you must choose from a pool of three at the beginning of a level. I finished the game, and immediately wanted more. The finale is beyond words, and plays with the mechanics established in the previous levels in a clever way. Expertly designed.

5. Collector’s Quest – by Crigs

Link: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=30740

Collector’s Quest has a neat, unique mechanic that is explained wonderfully through level design. There’s also a lot of nice touches that give the player character some charm and personality. Another example of a game that I wouldn’t mind seeing more levels from!

Got some more cool games that are totally rad? Link them below, or post your own list! Let’s highlight the awesome work put out by the thousands of devs that made this jam magical!

Rad Game Roundup – Part 1

RadGameRoundupLD25

As I play through the games of LD25, I’m making a list of games that I want to showcase. Once that list hits 5 entries, I’ll do a RAD GAME ROUNDUP. I’ll be handing out trophies and hopefully raising awareness for games that deserve some love!

So let’s get started with my first pick of LD25…

—————————————–

STOP HIM NOW!
by TijmenTio
48 Hour Compo
STOP HIM NOW!

This is one of the first games I played and I honestly didn’t expect much from the screenshots. THEN IT STARTED. WHOA, MAN! It’s a reverse horizontal shmup where you control different birds in an attempt to stop the hero. Different birds have different skills, and there’s even a reverse boss battle! To put it simply… this game is rad as crap.

TWISTED NEIGHBORHOOD

This one brought a smile to my face that grew and grew until finally I looked like some kind of demented serial killer as I hunched over the keyboard cackling uncontrollably. YOU PLAY AS A TORNADO!!!

RUDE BEAR

Jam Entry

RUDE BEAR

This game is hilarious and the art style is fantastic. The gameplay leaves a bit to be desired, but you gotta experience this thing. The characters are little cutout puppets on sticks and it has this sarcastic #YOLOSWAG atmosphere that just reeks of villainy. The soundtrack puts you in the mood to HUSTLE.

—————————————–

HAPPY LITTLE MURDER FRIENDS
by farmergnome
48 Hour Compo

This is probably my favorite game thus far. It is simply phenomenal. Think Retro City Rampage but with a much ‘smoother’ aesthetic. This is incredibly impressive for 48 hours. Hell, this is impressive for a week. It’s a total blast and there’s tons of randomness to keep it refreshing.

—————————————–

TYRANOFORCE
Code by Xewlupus
Art by Blob
Jam Entry

A GORGEOUS reverse shmup. Stunning art. It’s missing a few pieces to make it perfect, but DAMN it’s close. I think I’ll end up seeing a lot of reverse shmups by the end of this compo, but TYRANOFORCE is probably going to be at the top of that list.

—————————————–

So that’s it until next time! Keep playing and rating, and share your favorite games with the rest of us. With over 1,300 games to play… I’m sure we could all use a little help.
