World Tree – postmortem

Monday, August 25th, 2014 12:21 pm

Didn’t make it this time.
As I keep reminding everyone, I’m no coder. So even simple pathfinding leaves me scratching my head. This time it beat me completely. Maybe next time!

My game was going to be about greek goblins (kalikanjari, a common eastern european monster/malevolent spirit). They are supposed to live in the underworld and work all December to bring down the world tree. But invariably, their trickster nature gets the better of them, and they come to the surface for one night, which of course makes the World Tree heal itself, and their work is never done.

I’d like to see them succeed. Naturally influenced by the great Dungeon Keeper and some Amiga nostalgia, some time and resource management are needed, and a little fighting to keep things interesting. I worked hard for 2.5 days and disappointingly only have a design doc and a piece of music to show for it. I want to finish it, but I can’t make any promises. Pathfinding for the goblins in a maze of sidescrolling tunnels has left me stumped for now.

Not much more I can say. I will enjoy playing everyone’s games as always, even though I won’t be able to vote this time.

I love LD, thank you all for taking part.

My game and what the bloody hell went wrong with it

I made a game calledĀ In The Cave. Well, it’s not really a game. It’s more like a half of a game.

Suffice to say, I didn’t completely complete it. I think my biggest problem was that I started late. Way too late to finish a game. The game is not ready and will not be ready in time. I’m not a good gameĀ designer and I won’t be in a while. That is the second problem. There is no fun factor.

And I get that a game isn’t always supposed to be fun, but I meant fun as in enjoyment. It was going to be poetic and moody. A NotGameā„¢.

But poetic games need to still pose even the slightest puzzle. Mine was pretty much a walk, as in really just pressing the arrow keys until the game suddenly ends. I had thought to add jumping puzzles with water that kills, but I was running out of time and I couldn’t easily find a way to do this with regions in my middleware (Stencyl).

The one thing where I think I succeeded was the music. I flipped out a midi file of moonlight sonata and added autofilters and synths. That was good.

But you know, this was my third LD, and the first one I failed. And I think I could’ve done this if I had started earlier.

Hah. It always comes down to time, doesn’t it? Well, my current non-compo game calls, and I must followā€¦

Failed shark jams. Instead I got those two crappy games

I was so really pumped for Mini LD – Shark Jam that at the end, I couldn’t make it.

It’s true I kinda lack time, but the real issue is that I couldn’t find the inspiration to produce it. During Shark Jam, I was actually working in parallel on a separate game and had a lot of progress on it. I also took a break and made a game for 0h game jam.

For Shark Jam, I had the theme down and the title (was gonna do Darwinshark), then when it came to gameplay, I had no idea what to make. After working on the intro, I realized everything afterwards was going to be lame unless I figured out something brilliant very quick, and I didn’t. Basically, I failed because I had too high expectation about what it was going to be.

So that’s my failed attempt at Shark Jam. Too bad, it had a nice intro. You can see it there:

DarwinShark

So what have I been doing meanwhile? Well I made those 2 crappy game:

I’m honored… i guess
