Finished and submitted my first Ludum Dare compo entry.
This little gem is titled Epic Rampage. There’s a huge ass primate, and a city, in one place. I think you’ll guess why it’s named the way it is. If not, you’ll find out when you play it.
When I saw the theme ‘You are the Villain’ the first thing I thought of was sending my
slaves dwarfs to their horrible deaths in a different, well known game. The second thing I thought about was a game I played when I was young. Very young. Back then everyone still used www. before every url, and Flash was still called Shockwave. On the Shockwave website there was a game, similar to this one, which I had tons of fun with as a child. Sadly, after some time, it vanished from the web, as so many things did back then. I could no longer remember the name so I could not find it again if it even still existed in some dark corner of the web. I made this game to try and recreate that experience. While it still lacks a lot in style and gameplay compared to it’s ancestor, I feel it comes close to the original feeling, and with some a lot of polish, this could turn out to a very brilliant gem indeed.

Hey there, I’m Nik, and I’m a Ludum Dare first timer!
I had no idea what to do, at first. So I started to plan. The best thing I came out of was something to do with God, as he’s alone. So I emptied my mind into Game Maker, and created… a thing. This thing is called The Almighty Annihilation. It’s a 8-bit styled game where you have to wipe out the entire population of Earth with Meteors and Lightning Strikes. Sounds fun, right? Please tell me it is.
I made the game in 21 hours, with lots of frantic rushing and developer’s block. I know it’s not the greatest, and it seems very basic, but please. I am slow and can’t be bothered most of the time. I made a game. Enjoy.

It’s time for your final exam to graduate from your UFO school. Only problem is you were a complete slacker. You have no idea how to fly your ship. You have 3 minutes to impress your commander by destroying as many humans, cars, helicopters, tanks and jets as you can–or suffer the consequences!
All you can remember is to use the keys 1,2,3,4 and 7,8,9,0
* Coded in ActionScript 3.0 using the Flash CS4 IDE and using my mouth and microphone and Audacity to process the sound effects. I composed the music loop in Reason.
The Destruction of the Viruses was a fairly ambitious (but not very innovative) game written for the Infection theme. The player had to clean out the insides of a computer by killing all the viruses that resided there. The viruses could clone themselves, so it wasn’t always that easy.
It played like a top-down shooter, with FPS controls, and used OpenGL to draw a level that could be rotated around the player.
There were many good intentions, and much love for the number 5 (there being 5 levels, 5 enemy types, and 5 weapon types), yet the game failed badly. The biggest mistake was a bug which made some parts of the game framerate dependent, leaving it extremely hard if you had a low framerate (it played as intended at about 180 FPS). It’s hard to say how it would have fared without the bug, but as it were, it placed about 23th.
You can get the compo version, or its source, if you want to, but I really must urge you not to! Better to get the ‘made working dist’ released a few days after the deadline. Both of them are for Windows and OpenGL.
I have an even better version around somewhere, that I haven’t packaged and released yet. I’ll do that soon, and then I’ll include it here.
Having learnt some great lessons from my previous LD48 entry, Save The Hut, I decided to not include as much boringness, confusion and frustration in my next game. Together with the theme Construction/Destruction, and a cosmetic theme of Sheep, it all became so obvious: I was to make a game where you construct traps to destruct sheep. And lo and behold! there was The Destruction of the Sheep.
I decided to use pretty much the same tech as for Save The Hut, but used it better to get some fancier stuff, like sub tile precision movements, rotated sprites, pseudo 3D particle gibs, and paintable background.
The game was supposed to be a puzzle game, but in the end only a few levels were puzzly, the rest was just mindless, but entertaining, sheep destruction with lots of gore. All in all, it worked out very well, making me a winner in ‘fun’ and ‘complete’ categories, and third in ‘gameplay (innovation?)’ and ‘overall’.
There’s an improved version available, adding some fixes, and a 2x time speed-up button (but there remains at least two bugs and a lot of spelling errors). You can get this version of The Destruction of the Sheep as a .zip archive or as an installer. They’re for Windows.
Ludum Dare #2, theme Construction/Destruction and Sheep. My game, Sheep Strike. Sheep Strike is a 2 phase game. In the first phase, you construct using Tetris blocks, a defensive barrier to protect the baby wolves. Occasionally getting guns as well. In the 2nd phase, using your guns, you’d defend the base from a bombardment of sheep coming from the sky.
The game scored a Silver in the Theme category.

LD48 #2 theme was Construction/Destruction, with a minor theme of Sheep. As such, I created Hitsuji: Shears Of Fury, a game where you destroy construction equipment as a ninja sheep. It featured a really cool tweening animation system I wish I had used since, as well as some lovely use of very default Allegro fonts. It also included zombie construction workers, and pelicans. Pelicans appear often in these games.
