HybridMind is in!

For the first time in a long while I’ve got the weekend completely free so I’m going to make the best of it.

This is my six year anniversary in participating in Ludum Dare. My first was April of 2008, LD11!

I got my home office all setup and ready to go. Not sure yet if I’ll be using Flash or Unity. It will likely depend on the theme. I’m hoping to for getting some good  inspiration once the theme is announced.

If I’m lucky I’ll be able to use my preferred music program below.

HybridMind Music

I might also mess around with game genres that I haven’t typically explored in the past. Maybe something that involves writing, choices, dialog. Could be a fun experiment! We’ll see though.

Oh, I’ll also be streaming the development over on my TwitchTV channel!

Well, I hope everyone has a really good time doing Ludum Dare this weekend. I’m going to try and remember to stay as relaxed as possible and focus on having fun.

Sprite Code for Unity and Desktop Photo

Unity 2D Sprite Animation

I spent the warmup weekend cursing the collision detection in the new 2D mode in Unity for several hours until I realized that there was a new OnCollisionEnter2D. Makes sense, but lesson learned: know your tool before starting. I would have been so frustrated if those hours had been tomorrow afternoon, that I don’t know what would have happened.

After that debacle, I made a Unity2D Sprite Animation Script that I think turned out pretty nice and easy to use. Probably there are better and more efficient out there, but since we’ll probably use it, it needs to be available. So here you go. If you want to use it, consider it public domain.

Short instructions: Use Unity’s sprite editor to break up sprite sheet(s) into sprites. Then add one SpriteAnimator per type of animation you want on your game object (e.g. ‘walk left’, ‘walk right’).
Add one SpriteAnimationSelector to the game object with the SpriteAnimator(s). The CharacterController is not a full controller by any means, but it shows how to interface with the SpriteAnimationSelector.

Finally, this is where we’ll code, more computers are coming:

And here’s where we’ll try our luck with using stop-motion in making the game:

So, I have been preparing my desktop with all the shortcuts for fast development. I’ll be using SunVox for making the music, It is my first time and I’ll try to learn tomorrow how to use it…

Pickle and photoshop for the graphics, and Sublime Text 2 for making my html5/javascript game with ImpactJS.

I haven’t seen many “here’s my cave where I’ll be spending the next 48 hours” snapshots, so here’s one to get things going.

Hello world, this is going to be epic!

I got an idea and I’m going to start making it. I’ll be lazy this time and using a previous game of mine as basecode. The first thing I’ll probably do is remove most of the code, all graphics and well… start coding :)

Here is the warm-up photos that I took yesterday:

And here is my workplace:

I’ll probably be using my laptop, since it got windows, and has some power. The multi monitor setup is running ubuntu and has about 5 year old hardware :)

After ludum dare, I’m gonna install that nas(the white thing) so that’s why it’s on the desktop.

Edit/update: For those of you who want to follow me, here is the music I’m currently listening to (thanks last.fm) and here is my twitter

My Timelapse Video

I didn’t quite have enough time to finish even with the extra jam day.  I am still working on it and I hope to bring it to completion relatively soon. In the meantime, enjoy this timelapse video of me working on the game.  It covers 32 hours worth of work over a span of three days.  More information is provided in the YouTube video description.

It’s my first LD proper. I’ve been around in Mini-LDs, mostly lurking and learning before jumping into the fray.

Still unsure whether to go for the jam or the real deal, I just hope I’ll have an entertaining weekend polishing some gamemaking skills.

Pictured on the right, what my work environment will look like this weekend.
The same picture as a panoramic image, the picture is old but the place looks exactly the same as it did last year.

Here’s what things look like in the street today, around in Punta del Este, Uruguay.   There’s a big revamping going on the main street and I can hear a pneumatic drill from here, banging on the street; hope they’re gone for the weekend.  That would certainly make for a better quality creative time

I’m still unsure which tools I will use.  I have a C++/OGRE/OpenGL working environment, a FreePascal/SDL/OpenGL one, but I might just go for Flex/Flixel or Haxe if the project lends itself for it.

Food will mostly be sandwiches, possibly a steakburger, or pasta all of which is stocked in the fridge.
I’m already on IRC and I plan to be around working and hoping for inspiration to come.  If I don’t manage to pull something in 48 hours I will still be there to hang out with some great people, and maybe lending a hand wherever I can.

Cheers!!

Got my SNES gamepad to (hopefully) get joystick stuff working in the game.

Got my Line 6 GuitarPort so I can hook up my guitar to the computer for cool recording stuffs.

The gold box to the left of my monitor is a Retrode that I won in a naming contest. :) Fun!

Oh, and yes, I am using an old fan grill as a coaster for my now-empty glass of orange juice.

Workspace

I cleaned off my desk and bought some provisions for the weekend (Lorenz chips, Shark energy drinks, OJ). Here a pic of it, although it’s not impressive, or really tidy for that matter.

In the picture the OJ has been replaced with an orange+coke soft drink. :)

Thats it for today. I’m going to distance myself from the digital world, and try to relax, maybe do some stuff around the house. Go to bed early, and wake up when the compo starts. Then I plan to burn through the 48 hours with my 8 cans of energy drink. I have the next week off (no collage lectures) so I can afford to get sleep deprived and zombified. :) Hope it will give me the edge I need.
