Gradience – Update #3 – End of Day 1

I fell asleep last night before posting this little update, but Team Rehab performed admirably until late in the evening, here’s a little gif of something actually happening. Still a lot of work to do today to make it what we envisioned on those whiteboards. Let’s get cracking… after some coffee and toast.

Morning Post

morning This is what I actually do in the morning, instead of working on my game, dammit!

Okay, okay. So I decided to try Twine this time (yep, I know next to nothing about it, so it must be a success, right?). I’m not native English speaker, so this might be a little hard story-wise, but interactive fiction fits my general idea and I wanted to try this for quite a long time. And LD seems like a great opportunity to test weird ideas, as always!

So the plan for today is to get a little more knowledge about Twine macros, custom scripts, etc., and have the story fleshed out. I was aiming for some more interactivity using custom JS, but we’ll see how it goes. Story is a minimum for today.

Tomorrow I should work on the graphics (want to have some), and music (I did play with MilkyTracker for a couple of hours).

The final aim is to have a IF game working on desktop as well as mobile. :)

All graphics almost done, so… Coffee!

End of Day 1 Progress

Coffee Count: 4
(I’d thought it’ll be a lot higher)

Not too bad a day today. This is my first Ludum Dare. It’s been challenging, and very interesting. It’s hard not to go onto the site and check on everyone else’s varying stages of progression. I’d thought I’d share too.
So far I have spend the following.

9am – 2pm Thinking about game ideas and setting up computers.
2 – 8pm Programming with small breaks.
11pm – 1:30am – Programming with no breaks

That’s 5 hours just thinking about Evolution… I didn’t expect that I would spend so long thinking when I began the contest. This is a difficult topic I think, mostly because it’s hard to think of something achievable in the time.

After today, I’m not sure if I’ve picked the correct one… still seems really difficult. But we’ll see how we’ll get on.

Anyways, progress so far:

So, we have lots of little creatures. Press 1 -6 to generate them. The idea is that they inherit from the more stronger evolution. However, there are also some very bad strong mutations that can kill you.
The idea was to have a lemmings style game where you have to navigate get all the creatures to the exit… Quite a lot to go.

I’ve Gotta Stop Playing with These FISH!

They aren’t even what I’m planning to put in the game. These fish are placeholders based on a simple scribble.

It took me way too much time to figure out how to select an isometric tile with the mouse coordinates. Thanks charlie for the suggested reading, I must have read a half-dozen tutorials and it looks like I do iso differently than half of the people who wrote articles. Sines, cosines? What? The math turned out to be pretty simple, and then I had to align the odd alternate tile because the mouse was only picking one half of the map. Grr. It’s working fine now, everything can be selected intuitively. Gameplay will be next, and finish the control scheme/creature attributes. That should be easy.

So, here I am, playing with fish, wasting valuable time. I got frustrated, and I’ll get over it. This game is going to rock! And there’s a little more than one day left to complete it. I can do this. Just hit a roadblock, it’s behind me.

So, last night me and Regus, after grumbling about the theme for 5 minutes since it fit none of our ideas brainstormed for an hour and a half and then decided to go to bed. Turns out neither of us slept all that well, ghee wiz whoda thunk! We at least bashed out an interesting idea, which implements some features of evolution and natural selection as gameplay mechanics.

Right now I’m nursing my morning (mid-day) cup of coffee trying to wake up and trying not to think of how much time sleeping took up. Then we’ll bang out design decisions and milestones, I think, and get cracking.

One thing I can already reveal; we’ll be going online. YEEEAAAAAHHHHH!

So, yeah, I’m in.

I didn’t forget, just procrastinated. I want to consider myself a veteran at Ludum Dare, as this will be my 5th entry.

Hooray for Number Five!

Let’s just say I’ve graduated from complete newb to novice, and now am just above novice. I don’t make games professionally (yet), more of a hobbyist developer. It’s something I completely love to do, create little fantasies in code and allow people to see them and interact with them.

Ludum Dare is my way of looking back at previous projects, gauging how my skills have improved, enjoying the ride, and letting the community know that I exist. So anyway, there are tools I have used before, and I’m gonna list them:

  • language: C++ in MSVC 2008 Express
  • library: SFML 1.6
  • audio: SFXR, Audacity, PXTone
  • ear candy: musicforprogramming.net
  • health: good food, smoothies, coffee, some light exercise, and a decent amount of sleep (but seriously not too much)

Everyone, have a blast, and best wishes for your projects.

Planning done… Now some rest!

OK! I drank the first beer. The plan has been made. I’ll take a 2 hour nap after this 24 hours up time with physical activities. I’m tired…

The thing is a score attack game. Aliens try to blow up your tiny world. It is a little planet which you have to defend. There are evil space ships and mother ships with deadly bombs everywhere around you. You will have a hard time! 😉

Technical details are planned, algorithms are done except 1 that I have never did before. This will be challengeing to code becouse of the complexity level of the screen. So I take 2 hours nap then I walk my dog and say hello in my pub, drink coffee there and come back and I’ll be awake until all the coding is done. I plan graphics, sfx and balancing for tomorrow…

I’ll release everything that has been made as I go. Stay tuned! :)

Although I’m participating in the jam, so I have an extra day, and a team, working late is no exception. Today, however, I am especially tired, so I need some caffeine reinforcements.

LD15-8-29-breakfast

Alright– so my food photos won’t win any beauty contests but between the bagels and the coffee I’ve got all the fuel I need for the next few hours to keep working on my game mockups.  I got about 5 hours of sleep last night after waiting up for the theme.  Before going to bed I wrote 4 game ideas down and slept on them.   Waking up at 5am EST I felt I had a good synthesis of them in my head and an idea that felt fun enough to me to get cracking on some photoshop mockups after initially doing a little writeup on the game.  For now though it is om nom nom time.  Good morning LD!

I didn’t get much done last night,. I work best in the morning.  must be the coffee!

the wall and the worm?

You can see the “wall” collapsing in the back,. and the loosely defined pac-“worm”, that is the player, runs toward the screen in an attempt to escape it,. . Here the Advancing Wall is an Advancing Collapse of Doom.  This is going to be a bit rought, but something will be done.  I’m going to add some good/bad objects to play with on the wall, and then synth some sounds and music,. .  this all depends on how much time I get to work today,. . fingers crossed.
