Fast Cars

by dollarone - Mini LD Entry

I wanted to make something for the miniLD/in prep for LD, and I decided to use toasty and ReactorScram's public assets as part of this collab jam.

I experimented with a different physics engine (p2) and wrote some (basic) AI.

What I've got so far is a pretty fragile top-down racing game with a few unresolved bugs and many unimplemented features. Bugs include cars sometimes losing their way, suddenly disappearing (I think they collide too much and gets killed by the physics engine?) and erratic steering.

Features I wanted to add include:
Start and end flag/marker with a ready-set-go countdown and laps remaining
Different AI types (and better AI, especially for edge-cases)
Dashboard with speedometer/accelerometer/lap counter

Anyway, I learnt a lot making this, and I might come back to it at some point. But for now I just want to add this to the miniLD as I have no more time to work on it before LD starts.

Use arrows to steer, up to accelerate. R to restart. Avoid the grass as it will slow you down a lot.

Of course, comments appreciated!

Yay this makes me want to try making a racing game as well!

Too bad P2 got in the way(*), indeed cars disappear (including my own) or start wandering off tracks quite quickly. For some reason the game is slower *but* more stable on Firefox.

On Chrome where the game is I assume at the right speed, controlling the car is quite challenging but acceptable, and with some practice I could end up keeping a good pace and mostly avoid the grass.

So all in all it's a... promise of a good game :D With just a couple fixes a timer resetting each lap this could be fun to compete on, in time-attack mode!

See you on LD39 :)

(*)Personally my first experience with P2 was a quite frustrating, but after a couple games I got more comfortable and have grown to like it.

Oh and what about the hidden 6569 in the grass?

Thanks for comments! Yeah, a lap timer would have made it more playable. Maybe I'll add that atleast!

As for the hidden numbers... No idea - ask toasty/reactorscram! :)

Cotrol is too sharp. Cars looks just uncontrollable.

Routes don't happen such narrow.

The graphic interface is absent.
