Schmup Trainer

by automatonvx - Mini LD Entry

A Minimalist Shoot em To help you hone your skills from the comfort of your browser window. Make it through 5 rounds of increasing difficulty and post your score to the online Leaderboard. It tries to encourage accuracy by charging points for each bullet.

Works better in something that isn't IE. well obviously.

Edit:28.02.16 - Resubmitted Before deadline
Fixed Bug with score being submitted twice.
Tweaked enemy movement patterns although they are still pretty odd
Reduced Number of waves per level
Added Mute option to disable music in case it gets too annoying :)
and Pause option

Edit 15.03.2017
Updated Front screen to make it slightly less ugly
Changed Enemy Movement Patterns
Balancing Changes
Added controller support for browsers that support it (chrome/firefox)
increased points for enemies to push out old scores
Various other changes

Controls:
Arrow keys or WASD to move space to shoot.

M - Toggle music, P - Pause.

The weird square in the bottom right is obviously a fullscreen icon. The score submission at the end is only visible when not in full screen though.

'Art' made just for this, the music is something I made years ago but never used for anything.

Tools:
Aseprite
Reaper, Cubase for the old thing and the Emulatorx sample library I think.
Phaser.js - first time trying this, worked out ok.

cool game! Initially I was autofiring and wasting ammo like a madlad. Then I saw my score dropping...and dropping...

Great idea to keep players honest! Although some of the space invaders spawn too far to the side so I cannot shoot them! Anyway, niggles, great game! The attacker paths are awesome, I can't kill the vampire even though I should know where he'll be going by now!

BTW you are submitting each score twice! I've set your leaderboard to only display each user's top score, but I can delete dups if you fix your submission code :)

Charging points for bullets is a nice idea!

<3 IT!

Shoot-em-ups are great fun, and your submission is a true example of that. The accuracy factor being used as a requirement is quite interesting. So used to the focus being on dodging, that the new objective made me approach the game differently.

Nice game!
My only "complaint" is that the difficulty ramp was too slow for me to feel like I was progressing.
Other than that, well done!!

The scoring system is very creative. Good work!

I like the focus on accuracy and the general wave based idea.

There are some bugs: the enemies can shoot outside of the screen and the yellow baddies at times move out the sides of the screen immediately after popping in.

You could also try to increase the player movement speed, increase the enemy amount a bit and keep the enemies on the screen longer. This way killing all the adversaries becomes a test of dodging and shooting, more so than memorization or luck.
