Detective Quest: The First Case

by Tijn - Mini LD Entry

Martijn Frazer & Dollarone Productions present:

Thank you for your interest in the demo / shareware edition of Detective Quest: The First Case. In this graphical point and click adventure game, you will assume the role of John Quest, who has just gotten a promotion to police detective. You will get your first taste of the action-packed life of solving cases, fighting crime and busting criminals!

1. After booting to MS-DOS, insert your Detective Quest floppy disk into drive A
2. Optional: for increased performance, you may copy the contents of the floppy disk to your hard drive
3. Launch the game by running DQ.EXE

Detective Quest: The First Case is a next-generation adventure game, featuring high resolution 320x200 graphics, in full 256 color palettes. The game supports MOUSE INPUT, eliminating the need to type in commands. By moving your mouse cursor to the top of the screen, the ACTION BAR will reveal several icons, allowing you to choose from various commands:

- DO

Simply click your desired action, followed by the region on the screen where you want to perform the action. It couldn't be more intuitive!

This game was made over the course of several weeks by Martijn Frazer and Dollarone. Using the excellent we were able to create a Sierra-style graphical point & click adventure game for MS-DOS, despite knowing next to nothing about retro programming.

Even though the tools used are quite modern compared to what was used back in the day, we still learned that making a graphical adventure like this requires *a lot* of effort. This is why we were only able to make this short demo, instead of a more full length game as we were planning to do initially. We are planning to make this into a full game, but that might take some time, so look out for that! Completed. It is a very short demo, but you made a solid start on what could become a great adventure game.
