Yabac

by Team Klaus Klapper - Mini LD 69 Entry

ATTENTION: The demolishing tool is currently gamebraking bugged. You will not be able to place any more buildings after using it. Sorry for this, do not use it please.

--- I am not able to test the release for Linux or Mac OS X, please let me know if there are any problems running the distributed binaries for your system ---

PRELUDE: Unfortunately, this submission is very incomplete and a mere prototype of what it might be someday. I started to work on this project sometime before the start of this MiniLD on and off and only joined about a week ago. While moving to a new flat, I had to learn a lot about Lua and Love2D, as I was using the technology for the first time. The music has been generated by cgMusic and rendered using Reaper, which was also a first timer for me. I know this is very incomplete and a niché game. If you liked it, please let me know. I am very likely to continue working on this project.

Yabac is aimed at an oldschool audience that enjoyed classics such as Anno or The Guild. Right now, there is sadly only very little to do. Our time did not allow for more gameplay elements to be added before the end of MiniLD69. However, depending on feedback, this project will be continued, as we like it quite a lot up to now.

*** Features ***

- randomly generated world map
- classic resources and production chains
- soundtack generated by AI
- quirky zoom and fullscreen support (beware of bugs)
- lots of missing gameplay

*** Instructions ***

Simply download the distributed package for your operating system. It should work right out of the box. Attention Linux users: Unfortunatelly, there is no easy way to distribute a Love2D app for Linux so far. You will have to get a hold of the packages yourself as described here (https://love2d.org/wiki/Game_Distribution)

*** How to play ***

After starting up the game, you are sent of to a randomly generated world with some starting resources. Right now, there are only a few types of buildings and resources, namely:

- thalers (currency, used for buildings, generated by taxes from houses)
- wooden logs (chopped down trees by a lumberjack)
- timber (used for buildings, produced at the sawmill, needs wooden logs)
and
- house (some living room for your tax payers)
- lumberjack (chops trees to wooden logs)
- sawmill (produces timber from wooden logs)
- forester (replenishes trees around the area)
- road (connects places, right now useless though)

*** Goal ***

There is no goal yet, which is the biggest letdown of this release. The time just did not suffice to introduce additonal gameplay elements. However, we plan on continuing the development of this little game with your feedback should a general interest for this arise.

*** Known bugs ***

- Zooming and using the fullscreen mode can lead to ugly seems and rendering bugs. This is partly caused by the way Love2d handles SpriteBatches.

-Switching between the different states (building, selection, demolishing, etc..) may cause undesired behavior

-Demolishing destroys more than the area indicator shows - nasty.

*** Feedback ***
If you enjoyed this prototype and would like development to continue on this game, or if you have any ideas or suggestions on what to implement and how to improve the experience, please let us know in the comments. Nothing is more motivating than your feedback.

Nice idea and very fitting to the theme, I would totally play it when it's finished so please do!
the music get a little repetitive and distracting after a while, and I didn't understand what you said about soundtack generated by AI?

The randomly generated map is a good feature, and it looks natural so it turned out well.
I think the lack of actual people that go around keeps it simple and appealing visually.

my masterpiece XD:

a few notes:
- maybe make the prices as a hover tooltip? it took me time to even notice they appear below the top bar.
- zooming into the location of the mouse would be nice.
- mute/unmute (M) ignores volume
- A way to save your progress is important in this kind of game I hope it is already planned?
- choosing a building make it flash for moment in the top left corner
- some buildings flicker to black

suggestions:
maybe add food management so building many houses will have a "cost"?
Mine stone from mountains? / Fish from sea?
Remove forester and make trees grow naturally, to make it a challenge to not strip the map bare?

Thank you for your feedback, we really appreciate it. On your notes:

- price tooltips (or tooltips in general) and game saves are on our roadmap, the current solution just did not allow for a better visual clue
- we had experimented with a free zooming camera, however due to the spritebatch technique used by love2d, this quickly led to some ugly tearings, so we decided to disable it
- black buildings indicate a missing resource (lumberjack has no more wood around him), we probably should have explained this better

We'll probably add food and some additional resource in the next step as well as stone, iron, smelting, etc ...
