Chuck Norris' Retirement day

by georgi - Mini LD 69 Entry

Hi fellows,

This is my first Ludum Dare's entry game.
It is created using my own custom 2D engine I called Pixels2D, developed in C++ using OpenGL and SDL.
You can access the engine on:

The game's idea is simple. Alien invaders came to destroy the humankind but there he is Chuck Norris appearing as the last hope of all.
Playing as Chuck you have to kill all aliens and prevent them from removing the mankind off the Earth.

MOVEMENT: WASD or Arrow keys
WEAPON CHANGE: keys 1, 2 and 3 (the upper/top ones)
- `1` is a pistol, `2` is shotgun, `3` is a machine gun
If you WIN/LOSE instead of GUI indicators the game exits in the in command prompt(console) where it gives you stats on if you win or lose, how many humans/aliens you've killed and how many civilians remained in the end. On the next line it says: "Enter any key to quit..." so when you hit something on the keyboard and then press Enter the game will close.
Gotta say that it's an only Windows build...
In order to run it, just unzip and click the .exe file. :)

The development time of the game itself was about 3 days, while the engine took me 2+ weeks.

*UPDATE: For those who experience troubles with starting the game, read the following! Until I fix the issue with the error - missing MSVCP140.dll, you will need to download , the file you need is: vc_redist.x86.exe.

I will like and appreciate any kind of comments. :)

Enjoy, have fun and thank ya'll!

There are a few issues with the game. The first is the shortcut does not work, you have to open the Deps folder and double click on the file labeled chuck norris' retirement day.
In the actual game, if you lose or if you win, the game does not show a "game over" screen but rather prints it to terminal and then crashes.
And a personal qualm is that maybe norris can move a bit faster? Or have the aliens spawn at a random location every game, because I found my self only going to the ame corner each time.

@Javabot Hey, thanks for the response. I know you will definitely notice that but I did not have the time to fully implement (from scratch) everything in the limited time I had. So GUI is not finished and when you WIN/LOSE -> you quit by pressing a random key in the console(that's why I left the console be). I could make the enemy spawn on random coordinates every new game but I was more focused on other technical issues so I completely neglected that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Overall, I was just experimenting and preparing my engine for the big Ludum Dare #36.
Thanks a bunch again for your feedback! :)

Wish you all the best!:)

The gameplay was cool, but I did encounter a few technical issues. The first time I loaded it, there were only two aliens. At wandering around for a few minutes, the alien and human counts had remained the same. When I reloaded it, the game worked fine, but it did crash after killing the last alien.

@Steven Miller Hey, man. :) Thanks for playing and reviewing. The thing is that for the time I had I could not actually fully finish the game so when you WIN/LOSE it doesn't really crashes but just exits with a prompt in command line(console) where it gives you statistics if you win or lose. how many humans and aliens you have killed and how many civilians remained in the end. On the next line it says: "Enter any key to quit..." so when you hit something on the keyboard and then press Enter the game will close. Sorry for not explaining it beforehand! :)

Wish you all the best,

I had the same issues that the people above had, so I'll try not to repeat anything. I realize that the GUI isn't finished.

Some issues I had with the gameplay was that there was no real tutorial, so I had no idea what the aliens looked like. That might not sound like a big deal, but I wandered the map for several minutes seeing the alien count go up, and since I only saw people, I thought that maybe the aliens had disguised themselves as people. There were only about 150 people left by the time I actually found the aliens, and i had killed a considerable number of people on purpose and by accident.
Another issue I had with the gameplay was that for a shooting game, Norris and all the other characters move rather slowly. I think the game would still be balanced if everyone could move a bit faster; it would be easier to walk around the map that way and maybe you could pick up the different guns around the map instead of having them all to begin with.

I enjoyed the variety of guns and the idea was pretty cool. It was pretty nerve-racking, especially when there was only 1 civilian left.

Guys, I've got some of the things fixed and the game build linked here is now updated so if you want you can give it another shot and I'd love to receive your feedback as well. :)

Interesting game! I included it in my compilation video series of all of the MiniLD 69 games, if you’d like to take a look :)
