Snake-A-Roid

by stuckie - MiniLD 67 Entry

Snake-A-Roid is an entry for the Ludum Dare MiniLD 67 Jam.

It's a mash-up of Asteroids, Snake and a bit of Breakout for good measure.

Shoot the rocks, collect the power-ups, protect the snake's head.

Rocks will bounce off the snake's body and tail harmlessly though, and you won't collide with yourself either - but your bullets won't go through your body.

Controls are arrow keys to move.. shooting happens automatically.

Very well made, the looks are retro and it's fun to play, good work!

brilliant! frantic & lots going on, just how an arcade game should be. could be harder though, like you need to avoid self intersecting or avoid your wrapped bullets.

the auto shooting is a great idea & is a natural fit with snake's auto movement, really like the powerup snakefood too.

Cool idea! I expected it to be a little harder, but it's still very interesting.

Thanks for the comments!

Funnily enough, it was harder.. but I slowed down the speed of the asteroids and their spawn rate as I thought I was making it too hard... thankfully, they're all on tweakable variables, so can fix that later.

As for the snake intersecting - I did have that in, but it just made it outright ridiculous, so dropped it, it does give a bit of a breather to coil yourself up when there's so many small rocks flying about though.. avoiding the wrapped bullets might be something to try for a harder mode though - or making the tail susceptible to being hit too.

Definitely planning on working on this a bit more.. it works surprisingly well, and with a few tweaks here and there, some more power-ups, it could be really fun.

So, I've released a new version of this recently for $1.50
It is much faster, has a variety of powerups, different arenas and a crunchy chiptune soundtrack.

I've got plans for updating it further to release on other platforms as well.

You can find it on itch: https://arcadebadgers.itch.io/snake-a-roid
