by Bownly - Mini LD 63 Entry

NOTICE: Got the HTML5 version up and running! Tested on Firefox and Chrome.

It's an rpg. But with picross instead of combat. And a lame sense of humor.

I've been dying to make an RPG like Dragon Quest or Mother (1, specifically), but I detest their battle systems. So I replaced the battles with picross puzzles! Oops, I mean PiX puzzles. Gotta maintain proper branding.

By the way, it's pronounced "Picross rpg". And yes, I know the name is terrible.

Double by the way, there's a secret ending. Only true puzzle masters or true puzzle haters will figure out how to unlock it.

Tools used:
Codestuffs: HaxeFlixel + FlashDevelop
Soundstuffs: cgMusic + Audacity

That was a lot of fun. I couldn't beat the boss. I like the puzzles as battles type or RPG.

I also had the freezing problem in Chrome or even when I downloaded the HTML and ran it locally. The Windows version played fine.

Are you able to actually level up in this game? The description made it sound like you could, but there were no monsters after awhile. Maybe I was max level?

Nice humor.

When you talk to The Bad Guy, you get locked out of random battles. His dialog actually reflects it in the true ending route. I forgot to have him mention it in the normal route. Oops. You do level up, and you can check your level by hitting K to pull up your stats menu. I'll be honest in that I've only tested the game in Firefox, so thanks for alerting me to the Chrome problem.

That game was insanely fun. I love picross and the dialogue was hilarious. I think I found the beginning of the secret ending on my second run, but it took me a little over 45 minutes to beat the boss the first time I played through, so I gave up pretty quickly. Also, the music was really good.

When I deduced the locations of pixels in time on 6x6, I felt excited. If you continue to develop this (and I hope you do!) when I faced the boss on 10x10 and ran out of time before deducing a quarter of the pixels, I felt slow. Also it might engage me, if the little pictures I was aware that the little pictures I was solving were parts of a bigger picture.

Thanks guys for the kind words and encouragement. It means a lot to my fragile gamedev ego, lol. And thanks even more for feedback on the game's balance. I've been playing picross for probably 10 years or so and as a result was not able to effectively operate as the sole tester of my game.

@Steven Miller
Reading the dialogue before the fight is pretty much the entirety of the secret true ending. The only other difference is 2 extra lines on the post-fight ending screen. Consider yourself victorious enough.

Yeah, that was one of the main reasons that I was a little hesitant to use only randomly generated puzzles. While the shapes of the puzzles have no meaning or relevance (or indeed, even any logic) to them, it was a design choice that allowed me to easily and quickly add "infinite" replayability. Creating hand-crafted puzzles will definitely be a consideration for any continued development.

Awesome! Glad we can start off the competition with a game already! I haven't had a chance to play it yet but I love Picross so this is really really cool :D

This game is pretty fun. As a self-admitted Picross addict, I really like how you managed to fuse the two genres together. good stuff.

Great game, I thought the dialogue was hilarious. Did you write the music yourself? I liked it a lot.

Neat game! I included it in my MiniLD #63 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :)
