MiniLD #62
Theme: Final Boss – hosted by zatyka – July 2015
Hecate Boy is a retro fighting game based on the old GameBoy palette. It was made in about 12 hours for the Mini LD #62, and features 5 levels, a boss fight, and 5 bonus levels. The theme is "Final Boss".
Controls:
WASD to move. You must repeat keys to move,
giving a chunky/retro feel. Collide with enemies
to defeat them.
Secret bonus:
Once you beat the boss, the bonus levels
are unlocked. If you wish to unlock them
(either because you forgot the code or want to bypass the boss),
you can use the code 'jdf2j' to unlock them. Press the keys in order
without quotes.
Resources used:
Eclipse, Java 7, and Slick2D/LWJGL.

Thank you! I really enjoyed making a game with cool restrictions such as the palette.
My character loved teleporting through the map when walking left and right. Up and down did not have that behavior.
Also the left and right arrow keys are swapped?
I press left and walk right. That with the teleporting made left/right pretty unviable xD
All levels were very easy for me (using WASD and Arrow keys simutaneously to get tons of attacks)
The boss always wins after few seconds and it's hard to hit him with the teleporting glitches. I did not understand how to fight him.

I was only able to replicate this once for a quick moment while using the arrow keys, but it hasn't happened in any of the testing I've done with the WASD keys, or with other people who have played the game. I think I goofed on the arrow keys.

Hmm, yeah. I forgot to test the arrow keys because I put them in at the same time as the WASD keys, and forgot to test the arrow keys because I never use them.

Another thing I didn't notice unfortunately. I will definitely take note of this for my next game, though. Feedback helps.

Hmm, winning after a few seconds was probably because of using WASD and the arrow keys at the same time. It usually takes me about a minute (roughly), occasionally not being able to beat him before he beats me. I never experienced teleporting glitches with him; Again, probably because of the arrow keys. Fighting him I thought should be straight forward because he spawns enemies which you can kill, lowering his health. I thought it would be simple to figure out, but I made it and therefore can't understand it from a player's standpoint. I should have included clearer instructions.
Tl;dr, I unfortunately didn't notice these things because I had never tested the arrow keys, but hopefully most players haven't experienced this. Thanks for pointing it out for me, though. I never would have noticed. I will continue trying to replicate the issues you've had and fix them in this and future games. I appreciate you taking the time to give constructive feedback <3
I got the teleporting glitches too. Nice and simple, and the boss is definitely on theme being big and epic.
A bit annoying having to tap over and over, but cool idea. I included it in part 1 of my Mini LD #62 compilation video series, if you’d like to check it out! youtu.be/RsJfwrquboU
Thanks for including it in your video! I did the repeated tapping to add to the retro effect, but a couple of people seem to have disliked it.
Fun game! I was fine with the tapping, but my game sort of had it too, so I might just be used to it.

Waaah, this boss is soooo hard :p It's pretty fun that we used almost the same palette too! Good job, Jordan!
