Reversed

by dexafree - Mini LD 57 Entry

Hi!

This is my first LD (well, it is actually a Mini LD), and after being told about this by a friend (who also challenged me to make a creation), I only knew three things:

1. You have to make a game within a week

2. The topic is "REVERSED"

3. The only rule is "Can I? YES"

After taking a look to some other creations, I think that the topic was meant to be understood as "reversed in time". Well, my game is made by a different approach.

It is a simple platform&puzzle game, but with a new mechanic that came to me while thinking how should I understand the "Reversed" topic: You can only go to the right, but you can use mirrors, which will REVERSE [almost] all the world.

There are only a few levels, but it's as long as I have been able to create within this time.

Plot
===

Your nameis Modnar. You are the only member alive of an ancient secret order, called Redro Terces, who are known by their interest on mirrors magical properties. After arriving to a castle, you finally found the book you were looking for.

You tried some spells, and suddenly you realize that something went wrong.

"Let's get out of here", you think.

Controls
=====

* Move Right: Right arrow
* Move Left: YOU CAN'T
* Jump: Up arrow
* Use mirror: Space
* Restart level: R

As it's written in Java, you will need the JRE installed. If Chrome detects it as a potentially harmful file, feel free to dismiss it. However, I ensure it does not contain malware in any form (in addition, I will Open Source it in a few days).

At first I was saying "what does not going left have to do with reversed?" but then I hit the mirror and I got it - I liked the mechanic, it fit very well with the theme! Well done, and a good way of introducing the mechanics to the player.

I absolutely like this game! I wish there were more levels, though.
I think there was a small issue at the last level: Even tho I didn't collect all keys I could reach the door and end the game.
But fun nonetheless !

Nice idea with the mirror, cool game. I included it in part 3 of my MiniLD 57 compilation video series, if you would like to check it out. :) http://youtu.be/KU3n8AD-eEk

I love the game. There's only one technical downside: Your game doesn't use timestep for update so it depends on V-Sync to time everything, which sucks on monitors with a high refresh rate(I've a 144 Hz monitor, that's 2.4 times faster than 60 Hz, so the game runs 2.4 times faster, so it becomes really hard to play).
That said, great idea, great gameplay, great story! It's awesome!

Thanks for all your comments!

@CodeNMore Glad you liked the introduction, I knew that it could be a little confusing, so I started with very simple levels, in order to increase the difficulty as the game advanced

@Evergreen Games I had no time to make more, sorry!

@Nari08 that was a bug that missed the deadline, although I tried to solve it in a hacky way just before the upload, but I had no more time!

@Jupiter_Hadley Glad you enjoyed it :)

@joppiesaus At an early stage, I developed it with VSync enabled, but it started to lag a little when I added "pattern images" (such as tiles on the walls), so i finally had to disable it.
If you are brave enough (it's just changing a line), you can compile your own version with VSync enabled, just check the GitHub repo!
