Butterbats

by Chadivision - Mini LD 57 Entry

As everyone knows, butterflies turn into vampire bats at night, right? It's a scientific fact. Everyone also knows that touching a butterfly in the daylight causes it to spawn another butterfly...which will also turn into a vampire bat at night, and will then try to kill you. And that's bad.

So don't touch butterflies, don't touch bats, and run through as many magic portals as possible. Common sense, right?

Space bar to jump. Left/Right arrows or A/D keys to move. May have to click inside the web player first to get it to run.

Cool! I like the idea of the mechanics. Simple yet fun, I also died at score: 7.

I got 13, four times. Just can't seem to hit 14.

I did have a mechanic where the butterflies actually healed you, but that made it too easy, so I took it out. My wife was playing later and kept hitting the butterflies. They were spawning like crazy, and she said, "I can't get it to heal me". She didn't do so well that game. :)

Any suggestions on improving the physics? (There is one bug where you can get stuck right on the corner of a platform...didn't have time to fix that one.) When you play so much during testing it's always hard to tell if it really feels right, or if you've just gotten used to it.

Love the look of the butterfly! I included it in part 3 of my MiniLD 57 compilation video series, if you would like to check it out. :) http://youtu.be/KU3n8AD-eEk

My high score was only 9, well better than nothing. The music is strangely relaxing and pleasant.
Though my biggest problem with this game are the controls, the way the character accelerates/deaccelerates seems sometimes pretty unpredictable and illogical.
But spawning a lot of butterflies can also be amusing, because they are my friends, right? ... right?

Evergreen Games, with a score of 15, you are in a three-way tie for official title of Butterbats World Champion! The winner will be decided by a head to head competition in my living room, starting in five minutes. (If you and my wife don't show, I will win the title by forfeit.)

Jupiter, thanks for doing the video. Watching it helped me find a couple of things that are confusing to someone who is seeing the game for the first time.

klianc09, thanks for your feedback on the physics. It turns out that I somehow forgot to multiply in a delta time calculation, so the physics feel varies depending on framerate...not good! It was tuned for the framerate I was getting on my machine, so any higher or lower and it plays all out of whack. I really noticed that something was off when I loaded it onto my OUYA and the speeds were all off.

I'm adding some basic stuff that I didn't get done during the jam, like a title screen, controller instructions, etc. Also fixing some bugs, including the glitchy physics. I'll probably do an OUYA version and an update to the web version. May be a week or two until I can scrape together enough free time to finish it.
