Zelda in 16x16 Pixels

by benpurdy - Mini LD 50 Entry

The thrilling adventure we all know and love, re-imagined at just 16x16 pixels. How can so much awesome fit into such a tiny viewport??

Can you collect all eight fragments of the Triforce without getting killed?

Written in the breaks between a weekend of working in the garden due to unseasonably warm weather.

Didn't use any libraries, all code was written from scratch for the project. Photoshop for graphics, cfxr for sound.

Awesome, even though I don't know how to play xD.
But I wonder about one thing: "Photoshop for graphics"

I really liked the minimalism of it. I found it fun but I couldn't work out how to work the sword, never mind, I loved putting bombs down anyway.

Bombs ftw! Very confused about inventory bit... at least I think that's what it was in the room within first room ? Great job level design etc. Inspiring me to create a game of multiple rooms for a change... thank you for that also!

fcpfoof - I was just listing the tools I used, the graphics were done in photohop, which is kind of a joke since they're just pixels.

To those confused about the sword, just like in the original game you have to GET the sword first.. ;) It's in the cave on the first screen (the other two swords can be found in their original locations too...)

Got to the graveyard lol

Nice! Being a sucker for minimalist games I really enjoyed this :)

One thing that could be improved is sword combat. Enemy knockback would have been nice.

Good job otherwise :)

Excellent concept for a demake. You did quite a good job with the limitations of the medium. The game over screen is pretty. Battle is hard, but not impossible.

I didn't manage to find any of the fragments, but I might come back to this later.

Pretty cool.. but I couldn't figure out how to use the sword or open up a chest. Bombs are fun though and the sounds are satisfying.

@deathray: to use the sword, just press A and you will stab in the direction you're facing. (You need to get the sword from the old man in the cave on the first screen first.)

This is probably the most 'de' of all makes. I found a blue sword and three fragments, then i died. Maybe it was dangerous going alone.
Quite a big game world for the low graphics. :)

Hey everybody, thanks for the feedback! I spent a couple more hours on it, just to finish up a few bits that I didn't have time for in the 48 hour window. You can buy bombs/hearts now if you collect coins, max life goes up when you get triforce pieces, and the combat has been tweaked to be less clunky. Also no more infinite bomb supply. :)
