Manic Miner '81

by jfroco - Mini LD 50 Entry

Manic Miner is one of the earliest platform games.. and probably the first one I played. It was made for the ZX Spectrum in 1983 by Matthew Smith .

I’m demaking this mega classic game, as It would have been made in 1981 instead of 1983 using a IBM PC with CGA graphics card (I didnt know this card until the 90′s IIRC).

The game has only the first two levels of the original game.

Made using:

* Construct 2
* Paint.net
* GXSCC

How to play: use the cursor keys to move, Z to jump.
Find all keys to activate the exit door. Avoid enemies and other obstacles (cyan).

At first i read MARIO miner, but N makes the difference.

The spike above the key in the first level got me around 10 times in succession. >:( But this probably fits these kind of games. Atleast it wasnt another I wanna be the guy :)

Also it was fun finding out what these platforms actually do, instead of having a tutorial. Modern games should do this more often.

I can't exactly fault an Atari platformer from 1981 for not having checkpoints or confusing graphics. So... all the frustrating aspects of the game can be chalked up to realism, and they're not enough to detract from the difficulty.

So... very fun.

It's amazing how you catch the original gameplay and pace! The best entry from my point of view.
