ANSI_GFX_ADVNTR

by GaTechGrad - Mini LD 45 Entry

Inspired by BBS DOOR games of the mid-90's, ANSI_GFX_ADVNTR puts you in the role of a hero who must defeat the dragon to save the princess.

Linux build tested under Ubuntu 13.04. May require SDL libraries to be installed on your system to run (sudo apt-get install SDL). Source code is included if you want to compile it yourself.

Windows version now available! I spent all night working to get the mingw cross-compiler to compile SDL code under Linux, and I was successfully able to create a Windows executable. SDL Windows DLL libraries included. Enjoy!

Tools Used: gcc, Gimp, AcidDraw through DOSBox, Ubuntu 13.04

Sorry, there is currently no online gameplay, but I would be willing to try to add online capabilities if there is any interest. All of the graphics originated from .ANS files, so those could actually be used to port this to a real BBS game.

Bug Fixed: Fixed memory leak. (Added SDL_FreeSurface after drawing text)
Bug Fixed: Game no longer crashes on Windows after defeating the dragon. (Increased size of character array, used by sprintf to display game end text)

Some things I would like to add to the game:
- More enemies, areas, etc
- Unique weapons and armor to buy at the blacksmith
- Magic spells and a mage trainer
- Fix minor menuing problems
- Online capabilities
- Trade Wars style zones to make a world map, with the village at the center
- Music and sound effects
- More types of events

Very polished and eye pleasing. I would have played it through if it wasn't for that nasty memory leak. It was so bad that I had to restart the PC. Nothing to say except good job and keep adding things.

Interesting distilled RPG experience. Sadly the memory leak killed it for me just as I was beginning to get the hang of it.

Is there a win condition yet or does it go on continuously? Really curious, what will/would you do with online? I can't imagine how that would go...

And those damn old ladies... Is it ever a good idea to help them?

Thanks for playing. The memory leak should be fixed now.

Helping the old ladies is beneficial if you have low health and little or no gold. That way you have little risk of losing money.

There is a win condition, which is defeating the dragon at the castle. Buying items from the merchant is the key to progress to new areas.

Really good game! I think I win, but I'm not so sure! :)

Here are a few tips for anyone who is stuck:
- Buying the candle from the merchant in the Meadows will open the Caves
- Buying the bombs from the merchant in the Forest will open the desert
- The merchant in the desert will give you a note
- The merchant in the Caves will only sell you the key if you have the note
- The key will open the Castle, for the final battle with the dragon

DoH! I didn't read that last comment before quitting. I had the note but didn't play long enough to meet the merchant in the caves. That's the one thing I didn't try.
I was already at max level.
Nice graphics. I liked this a lot. Played quite a while too.
