Demon Front, A Hero-centric RTS

by citizenlion - 7dRTS / Mini LD 44 Entry

Demon Front, by citizenlion and wrongcoder

The demon gates have opened. The city is in danger! You have been hired by the orcs to lead them to victory.

To win: Close all the demon gates by personally beating them down. Command troops within earshot to protect you from the enemy.

To lose: Allow the invaders to break down the wall and swarm into the city. Dying also works.

Then... walk around the map! Find secret items! Do side quests! Become involved in a rich, RPG-style story!

No, we actually didn't implement any of those yet, but give us a high rating! It would inspire us to work harder!

I couldn't get the java to play but the web looked really impressive! till it slowed and then crashed. I wish the titles where on a little longer in the begging wasn't entirely sure but the pic controls where helpful.

Love that oldschool feel. Reminds me of a great Indiana Jones game that I played as a kid.

Commanding of the troops feels kinda clunky, as you have to escort them to their goal while the enemies are attacking from two sides. Maybe it's just too hard for me. The voice acting was funny but still got annoying eventually.
I liked the limited vision effect, that gave it an unique vibe.

Bug note: there is a minor bug that I just found out which can be easily worked around. Orcs are by nature easily distracted and will forget your commands after 10 seconds, but due to this bug, they sometimes forget your commands sooner. The remedy is to just reissue the command to the same group of orcs to reset their memory.

The short attention span is intentional, and can be used strategically ;)

By the way, I realized that the game is really hard :D If anyone manage to beat the map, please post here for bragging right!

I've made some performance improvements to the HTML5 port (requires Flash for audio on some browsers) so now it's just slow, not horribly horribly oh no it crashed my browser slow like it was previously. Java is still the original and recommended version but you can get a taste for the game in your browser. Please enjoy!

Download version didn't work for me, web version worked fine. Very hard! Probably would have been good to start on a map with only one path to defend (though I think there only is one map? so I can see why you wouldn't do that if you only had time to make one map)
Maybe also having some indication that the walls are under attack? My first play I didn't realise there was a path on the right that I needed to defend :P

Just one day left in the contest so there's not much point, but I uploaded an optimized web version. It should be completely playable now with zero slowdown. The new web version also had the difficulty toned down just a little bit (from "masochistic" to "hard").
