3D Chess

by klianc09 - 7dRTS / Mini LD 44 Entry

------Gameplay Notes-------

It's a turn-based strategy game where the sky is the limit, or something like that. So it qualifies as a Real Time Strategy game, because it really takes time to play it. *cough cough*

You basically control everything with your mouse.
-Right Mouse Button: rotate view
-Left Mouse Button: select unit or move unit
-Middle Mouse Button OR Spacebar: move or pan view

You can navigate through the menu and game modes via the Number buttons "1 - 9" and "T" for Tutorial.

The modes 2 - 5 are for two players playing against each other (or only one against himself, if you wish so), and modes 6 - 9 are for one player against an AI.

Music: All the videos available on youtube.
Sounds: Whatever sounds you can make with your mouth.
Graphics: Only those created and rendered by me.
Win-Condition: Whichever you can think of, but I would say, you are already a winner if you can get a little bit of fun out of this.

------Technical Notes------

This project has been created with LWJGL and is hosted on Bitbucket. You are free to look at the code, fork it, make it better, make it worse and learn from it.

The Models have been created with Wings3D, my first 3D modeling experience, and I must say it's really beginner friendly (given you understand something about 3D rendering).

You may recognize that the camera isn't working like your everyday pitch/yaw modifying camera. It's a special camera system based on quaternions which took me a whole day to understand and implement. So look at the code if you are interested.

------Personal Notes------

At first I didn't even want to participate, but then I said heck why not, then I knew again, because I have no holidays and no time. So I had to throw away all plans of an AgeOfEmpires 1 HD Remake and just settled with one simple idea I had since some months, which has partially been inspired by chess and partially by looking at a ceiling for hours.

I hope you have fun.

This is hilarious! And mind breaking.

Not gonna lie, I didn't have any idea what was going on most the time :p Some delay / animation for moves would've been really nice!

Awesome job though :D

"partially by looking at a ceiling for hours." LOL

@Darkfrost: yes, move animations was one of the features that just didn't make the cut. But this will for sure be implemented in the post-miniLD version. Honestly, I was happy the AI was moving at all at the end.

This seems brilliant. I didn't know what was going on, because I have minimum knowledge of chess. Even in 3 dimensions.

I think it's totally brilliant. Makes you think about defending your position from all sides this time! First time I played, the AI's queen wraped around the board and killed me from behind. >_<

Jeez, I suck at chess and I suck three times more at it with this many dimensions!

@DogShitEmpire - you sure you don't suck 3 powers as much? (n^3) :P

@superjoe: Hey, hold on! That somehow sounds like you're making fun of me! But yeah, I guess my comment is not entirely accurate, since it implies that regular chess is only one dimensional. :)

This is really cool - it'd be nice if I could select enemy pieces to see what their valid moves are.

Nice, but not critical - I felt happy :)

Takes chess to a point where it's actually fun to play. I like how the "board" feels small and clear. I don't know much about chess, but I really like this. Well done!

An innovative and very good idea.. although it doesn't fit the theme of a REAL TIME strategy game. Other than that, it would take a very long time to master, and it is very awkward trying to play it the first few times. The AI is also a bit too good, in my opinion.
