Silo Commander

by bedroomcoder - Competition Entry

When I was a kid, back in the 80's I remember vividly the Red Scare. There was always the fear that the Russians might flip and press the big red button.

Silo Commander puts you in the shoes of the eponymous commander of a city with a nuclear silo underneath. The city is coming under increasingly heavy attack, and it's up to you to marshal the city's defences and protect the silo at all costs.

You have 4 wall cannons, a tank in the city, a shield over the city, Shrike anti-aircraft rockets and a smartbomb facility. Against you are an increasing number of enemy bombers, and maybe even worse...

My game is a reworking of a type-in game for the ZX 81 called "Cannon." It's a bit of a remix, with elements of missile command and space invaders. The person I brought in on this is my mum, who understandably has never been involved in game creation before, and serves as the voice of the computer monitoring the situation. You normally know you're in trouble if she pops up.

Fantastic! I love the use of sound and the way different bombs cause different amounts of damage as well as the way you progressively lose your ability to defend yourself. And I love the final graphic! I remember growing up terrified of a nuclear war - great theme, great game!
