Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

Bill Untold

by josemorval - Jam Entry

Want to know what happened to our beloved geek Bill after the events occured in the darkest of the timelines?

Unfortunately, when our strongest Hero woke up the even more stronger monster of this world from his slumber, he was not able to capture him. Despite of the great efforts of our last bastion, The Cave Guard, the monster was able to escape freely. And... he had no mercy. Other monsters joined to him to battle against the humans who have forced them to hurt each other in a daily basis. They emerged victorious (it seems provoking earthquakes and tsunamis at will is pretty devastating). But they were not done yet, they wanted to feel like humans did. With help from some scared-to-death humans, they turned around the system humans had developed for decades to capture monsters.

Here is where our new hero comes to action. Nobody knows better than him this system. And, despite knowing how to create a living organism storage in computers and hacking is not the same, he will try his very best.

You will have to search through a net of servers where is a key file that will help Bill to get back his finest invent. You won't know how it is the net and you will have to discover it node by node. But beware! They already know you are trying to recover the file and you will only have a specific amount of time to find it and get it back to you.

- Inspect: It has two functions. First, discover which nodes are connected to the current node you are connected to. Second, choose to which node you wish to connect to.
- Check file: Check whether the key file is in the current node or not.
- Send: If "Check file" returns true, this new option will show up allowing you to send the file to another nearby node.

All of the previous actions consume different amounts of time. Manage it wisely!

Find the key file in one of the net nodes and then retrieve it to your home computer or initial node.

As it can be seen from the start, we have used Pokemon art assets and our "story" is based in the Pokemon world and Bill's character. This is used only for fun purposes. We do not try to harm the Pokemon trademark in any way or profit from it.

This is pretty cool. The hacking mechanic is interesting and fits well with the pacing and the time pressure. It's slow, but not too clunky.
I wished there was still feedback on which computer you are when performing a Check file.
I managed the first room but got caugh in the second.
Good mood and nice choice of music too.

I like the simplified, node-based take on hacking this game uses. I just wish there was a bit more to do than hunt down files and transfer them. Maybe you could do things like hack firewalls (enabling access to nodes you normally can't reach) and hinder security (giving you more time to execute your hacks)?

I couldn't understand what I have to do until try 5. But then I got it and stuck on the second level!... the problem now was that in full screen I can't see few nods on the left... but then it went better :) So yeah, nice idea. Graphics. But a little confusing at first.

Interesting gameplay - very easy to understand. However, I'm not really sure if there's any strategy - you basically have to guess correctly, or you lose.

I felt the gameplay was a bit confusing, and that whether you succeed or not is basically purely by chance. On the other hand, the game has a very good mood and fitting graphics, it just needs to be a bit clearer and give more feedback to the player.

Also, I'm a little curious as to what really happened in this "darkest timeline".

Neat game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 37 games, if you’d like to take a look. :)
