Ludum Dare 37 — December 9th-11th, 2016 — Theme: One Room

Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

In That Same Old Room

by velvetlobster - Jam Entry

A kid sees herself alone in her parents apartment, as her imagination creates monsters for her to defeat.
We created the whole art, music and some of the sound effects.

There were so many other features we started but had not time to finish or fix its so many bugs in the time of the jam so we ended up with this much simpler version of what was our intention.
Our start point was to use a battle system similar to that of The Binding of Isaac and then to evolve it with story, dialogue and different upgrading mechanics. Most of it was almost ready, but we have to remove them after finding a really tough bug on the dialogue mechanics. There was also a boss fight we prepared, but chose not to include in this final version.
We learned a lot with this! Next Ludum Dare we will certainly be faster and more prepared.
Also, we recognize that there is a bug in the diaogue mechanics and that the player is walking kinda too slow (in the initial idea, after each room you would be offered options for upgrading speed and fire rate).
We wanted that people could play what actually was done until the last minute of the ludum dare time, so we did not fix any of those for now.
Hope you can enjoy this ^^

Also, thanks so much on the comments about the art! <3

So this is cleary influenced by "The binding of isaac", a game that I played for several hundred hours xD. It looks good, the music is fine and I love the unique graphics style (never seen that before). Good animations.
The movement feels a bit laggy though. Overall very nice work!

I like how at the beginning you have to press space to continue dialogs to get told to press space to continue dialogue. The atmosphere at the start is very gloomy and well done. The lack of death animation/game over message makes it quite confusing when you die and the game instantly restart. The fourth room is pretty hard, I couldnt get past it in many attempts. Great game overall!

I Really liked the atmosphere and as lonesurvivor said, the game really brings me bind of isaac to my mind since at first play, i just couldn't pass through the fourth room, guess i just suck at that kind of game xD

One thing that would really improve the gameplay, would be increasing the player speed and shoot speed a little bit

Nice visuals and overall mood. Couldn't beat the room where firing things appear.

Great work, I really like the visual style it looks great. Some kind of game over message before restart would help make it less confusing dying, and in the fourth level I got one shot by the firing TVs as soon as I walked in the first few times till I got a lucky spawn and they were on the other side. Good job overall though.

I love the art style, it helps a lot build an eerie kind of atmosphere. Gameplay is clearly inspired by The Binding of Isaac, which is a good thing :D, and it feels solid, even if movement feels a bit slow.

Quite a nice entry in general, good job!

I like where this is going. I definitely wanted this to play a little faster, a little more "bullet-hell" but overall I'm happy with it. I LOVE the art and I think the audio is pretty spot on for the mood. Well done!

oh! Nice! wow. the style is so dark and cool!! Can I find it on indiexpo? I'm making videos about the games of this Jam, but only about the games hosted also on! Tell me if you will add it, so I can include it in my next video ;)

Hit boxes and controls made the game difficult to play. I liked the art style, though!

Art style is awesome! Attack controls are weird and unresponsive though.

This one has a unique graphical style, the music and sounds are equally awesome! It's the best game I played so far in LD37. It's a mix of Binding of Isaac and P.T. (Silent Hills).

Gratz! :)

The art in this game is amazing! I also loved the music. The game itself reminds me a lot of the Binding of Isaac. Well done!

best graphics so far. I love the hand drawn environments and animations. shooting was a bit unresponsive on my PC making this a very hard game, can't explain why, movement was smooth.

Really nice aesthetic - this visual is great. Interesting gameplay which could be improved - I would like something more speed. Well done ++

Binding of isaac is one of my favourite games.. So I really enjoyed your game :)

Art is great, music is nice, but gameplay could be better :)
I guess with this awesome art-style some different shooting mechanic would fit better :)
But hey, this is your first LD - and it is surprisingly polished for first LD game, keep up the good work :D

Very nice visuals though the gameplay needs a bit more work but that is usually the case with jam games ;) It's still a fine entry, congrats!

The art style is really really nice. Awesome job on submitting your entry. I see you were inspired by isaac :)

I really like the visuals, though I was having some issues with controls, most the time it was OK, but occasionally the fire buttons (arrows) didn't seem to respond. Apart from that I loved the atmosphere and for the most part gameplay seemed tight.

Lovely graphics, interesting game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 37 games, if you’d like to take a look. :)
