Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

The Night before Christmas

by fyhr - Compo Entry

This is my first Ludum Dare entry. I didn't manage to finish everything I wanted so I'll explain the original idea here.

It's the night before Christmas, and you are home alone. Santa has gone insane and send his minons to get his presents back. Christmas being the most important day of the year you job is to prevent this and save Christmas.

The original plan was for multiple enemies to break in through the windows and doors and steal presents from a big Christmas tree, and attack you if you get in the way. In the end Santa would appear through the fireplace and you would win by defeating him. in the end I struggled with the graphics and only got the basic game features implemented.

You can control the character with WASD and shoot using the left mouse button.

Game could be improved by adding a score / timer that shows how long you lived

Interesting concept, as @stoffe1992 said; you can improve it with a round or score timer. That would make the game more attention grabbing. Well done for a first try. In future LD don't worry about graphics too much. It should be your last priority. However, what you did looks good.

Funny that the concept that you went with was really similar to what I ended up doing. I too in the end did not manage to implement a boss (I did not have the time to program the battle) Hope you had fun doing this and maybe you can get your concept more fleshed out the next time around.

The game is simple ... lacking feedback and animations.

Your entry is quite similar to mine, and I've got to say that I should have used the mouse like you did. It sure works better than just using the keyboard.

Also, I can see why you spent so much time on the graphics, that room looks pretty good.

It's a shame that you were not able to add a scoring system and a Boss battle, that would really improve the game.

Good first entry. The mice(?) were really fast and I wasn't sure if my weapon was doing anything. It takes too many shots to kill the mice especially with how fast they move. Would be cool if bigger baddies needed more shots but the mice were one shot, but it sounds like you may have planned for more baddies like that. Look forward to seeing your second LDJAM entry next time around.

I read your description and the concept is nice, have you continued working on it after the jam? it would be nice to see your progress.

For now, I think it lacks some essential features, like being able to see the player lives, a score and some sound effects (you can use when in a hurry, I always do).
