Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

soup kitchen

by Blanky - Compo Entry

A soup kitchen. This is your place, well, until you start to bother too much. Don't do that..

It takes a shot while to load. There is no loading screen. Just be patient with the white screen.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.
I had some feedback that people are unclear what to do. See the new 'What to do' section below for clarification.

Critique is very welcome.

What to do:
There is a timer on top. You should try to last as long as possible. There are ways to replenish your timer. I left these ways purposely unexplained so that the player have to figure it out. I was trying bring this as an exploration feature in the game.

Instructions: (Thanks for the comments)
You are the slightly different coloured hobo. Your moves are simulated randomly just as the rest of the hobos. You have to use your abilities when you come close to a soup worker.
You increase your chance of moving to a soup worker when you pick the special item 'coffee'. The rest of the special item's functionality I leave as a secret.

You purpose is to last as long as possible.

Sorry, no idea what's going on in this game, instructions are very unclear, and not sure what any of the things are.

I think it was the slightly different coloured hobo, but he was moving around on his own? How can you get soup if you never wander over near the people?

Updated the description on the page to clarify these issues. Thanks for the replies.

A bit interesting, the game and the commands were a bit complicated.

Even with the instructions, I didn't understand how to play, sorry.

I dig the chunky pixel art, but the player's sluggish movement drains the fun out of this. The sound effects are...interesting. But overall, I found myself actually wanting the time to end to see what the game over screen would display.

I'll echo the comments here. It's too difficult to figure out what's going on even with the instructions. I can't quite figure out what most of the icons are.

I commend you on making an authentic atari game ;)

Very confusing game, but was funny :) Liked the old school art, the music and the humour.

Interesting idea but you really need some indication of cool-down for the skills and a passive way to influence the character's movement. It all felt too random I'm afraid.
