Ludum Dare 37 — December 9th-11th, 2016 — Theme: One Room

Well, Mike ran in to problems getting ldjam.com working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

Cube Hop

by johnasebok - Jam Entry

The timer is ticking! Can you hep the cube reach the portal in time before it ends up being trapped for all eternity?

If you hold the Z or X, the cube will lurch to that direction and you will have to release the button to move again. The feet of the box stick to everything while you hold the Z or X, releasing Z or X during the cubes ascension will cause it to jump - the further the travel of the leg the further the jump - if you wait to long and reach the end of the legs travel, you stick on wont hop. If you play the webgl version, you may have to full screen it as the window will cut off the countdown timer if you don't.

I can't keep moving by holding Z or X for example. I'm not sure if that's on purpose or if the panel suggesting to hold the button was somewhat misleading. I have to keep taping it to move correctly.

I also can't seem to get through the bottom of the map no matter how much I try. By the time I'm able to reach that board saying to press both buttons to jump straight up, I get the game over message. I gave it many tries but at best I reached a little bit farther than that.

The concept is nice though, I like the idea of the block moving through some kind of feet and the movement it makes when you release the button. Could've used some audio, but overall it seems ok.

Thanks bigpan. The movement was a choice for the game mechanic.

I will add some more detail to the game description to help future players out ;)

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but tapping Z and X to hop around I end up hitting some invisible walls or something after the first pit - can't progress any further than the first pit (where it shows the Tap instructions) as the cube just keeps hitting it's head on something invisible then not moving. Eventually it says I failed, but no idea what the lost condition was.

The "Hold 'z' to move right 'x' to move left" text is really misleading. It gives no explanation whatsoever and only confuses the player, since the game is mostly based on "tapping" and "releasing the move on the proper timing". Simply changing it to "Use 'z' to move right 'x' to move left" would make it a lot better.

The mechanic is interesting, but I couldn't get the hang of "walking" correctly (even though I was able to beat it once!). Climbing (i.e., the last section), on the other hand, was quite easy and fun.

One big issue I had was the last step of the "stair case" (before the vertical jump). Since the ceiling is low, it's quite difficult to jump for enough horizontal momentum without hitting the ceiling. The fact that the player must fall within a certain range of the edge (otherwise, they can't push themselves right) only makes this harder.

Simple animations could really help here. If instead of cubes the legs were two rectangles, it would be easier to understand when a leg reached its maximum distance. Also, rotating the cube forward could be used to better show that they got stuck on their leg (as if the cube tumbled on its own leg and fell on its face... kinda...).

Its an interesting movement mechanic.
I'm not sure if its a /fun/ mechanic, but it is an interesting one.

Interesting movement mechanic. I think with some tweaking (like lower the acceleration when holding Z/X to give more control) you could make it really interesting to move. I know you have z for right and x for left, but you should really switch those. I get that it implies which side the smaller cube comes out of, but it's not enough to muddle what you're really doing which is moving left/right.

Your one fatal sin however: you put in a timer :(

The game's already hard enough to learn the controls of and I wanted to experiment with them to learn them better, but the timer is all "nope, too bad".

High marks regardless of all this however, nicely done.
