Ludum Dare 37 — December 9th-11th, 2016 — Theme: One Room

Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

=== INFO

If you want to tweet about this game, please retweet this post:

You find yourself in an unfamiliar room. All doors are locked. Who put you there, and why? Can you get out?

Didn't quite turn into the intended game where you were supposed to be finding out clues about the owner of the room by examining stuff as there simply wasn't enough time, but we did wrap it up in some way at least!

Only mouse and left click is enough, but A, S and D on the keyboard work for left, back and right respectively. All necessary instructions should be on screen. Point and click!

Made by Marte Kvamme Strømmen and Ava Skoog!

Just a few quick notes...

This was originally intended to be a much more elaborate story, where the things in the room would allow the player to pick up more and more clues in order to piece together an idea of what the owner of the room was like. Checking the phonebook, answering machine and so on. Unfortunately time was running out and a compromise had to be made as is usually the case for us during LD.

The result is an interesting concept, but not quite what we had in mind. Hopefully you'll get a good idea of it anyway, and we hope what little game there is might bring you at least a few interesting minutes!

The game is well made, just that I got stuck pretty fast.

Nice Game! I got stuck at They Slide, but just kept clicking the last digit at the computer till i got it. Cool Twist!

It looks awesome, but the story seemed to be really short. Really nice and good looking entry tho!

Great audio and visual design, nicely atmospheric! I think I perhaps got as far as was possible but I'm not sure - I turned the computer on but couldn't figure out the password. It certainly has potential and I'd be interested to play the full game if and when you finish it.

Like to see adventure game on LD!

Thanks for all the nice comments so far! Just to clear up some confusion in case anybody feels they got stuck: the game is only "incomplete" so far as not having very much content (i.e. the game is much shorter than it was supposed to be), but there is a distinct end to the game, and the game can indeed be "finished"! c:

I'm thinking the descriptions on the cards has something to do with the shapes of digits? I'm stuck … Very nice visual style with half-tone (duo-tone?) filter. Good movement sounds that seem ambient sounds. Good atmosphere.

Anyway, maybe a little hint? :)

Don't know if there's a particular name that can be applied to the effect, but we basically messed with the palette by multiplying the normalised (0-1) colour values by some value, rounding the decimals off, and dividing the numbers back down again. And then of course there's the checkerboard effect on the entire thing. And a vignette in the corners! c:

As for the hint:

The notes all describe something (plural, hence 'they') that can be found in the room!

Aw. Seems quite a few people are having trouble. :c I really wish we'd had the time to make the game as intended. The riddles on the notes were a last-minute solution, unfortunately.

There's a hint below the spoiler warning in our last post. I can add to that hint, and if that doesn't help either, feel free to hit one of us (@avaskoog) up with a PM on Twitter and I can give you the full solution if you really want it—just don't want to spoil it in the comments here. :p

There are four numbered notes scattered around the room. The notes all describe something (plural, hence 'they') that can be found in the room. Count how many there are of each of these things.

An excellent entry that despite its length, works really really hard. The puzzle is really obtuse and makes no sense, but I guess that's true for most point and click puzzle games. It even manages to have a proper ending, which is pretty damn amazing given the jam restrictions! Kudos!

Pretty graphics, I got stuck.

Dec 17, 2016 @ 4:28pm

Really good stuff! A lot of clever graphical and aesthetic work. Stuck to the theme and created a believable atmosphere. I wasn't able to play all the way through because I think my computer has a problem with Unity right now for some reason, so obviously I won't take off points for that. Nicely done.

This game really manages to invoke a sense of unease and anxiety. It's not just the graphics and the excellent sound design, but the fact that the puzzle is sort of vague actually works in it's favour.

I had to force the last digit, just like Spab before me. But just when I hit the right digit I realised that the answer to "What slides?" was literally in-front of me.

Really well done. One of my favourites so far in this LD and I'd say probably your best LD-entry that I've played.

Dec 17, 2016 @ 5:18pm

Really loved this game! Great atmosphere, visuals and audio. The puzzle was also well thought out. I'd sure like to play a longer game in this style. Congrats!

I'm super bad in these point and click games, but the atmosphere was great and also the interaction with the environment. Very nice job.

the idea behind the game is really cool and the graphics are great.
it's a pity that the puzzle is just a hidden objects search, but as you say time is not abundant during LD
so congrat's on finishing the game because I think it's the ending that makes the value of the game wich is overall a very goos entry

Cool! I love the atmosphere - the sound design is really great. The combination puzzle was pretty obtuse, I didn't make the leap from the note clues to the objects - making those connections a bit more obvious might help. Would love to see the story more fleshed out. Great work!

Fantastic work you two!

Thanks yet again to all new people who have played! Working my way through your entries as well. Falling a bit behind, but we do have two weeks. Getting there! c:

It's a pity that a lot of people get stuck. The riddles with the notes wouldn't have actually been in there at all had there been more time to finish the game as intended, and so the riddles were an unfortunate last minute solution. Maybe we'll spend some time on a post jam version that better represents the original idea.

Yay! Glad you finally beat it! And feeling quite honoured that you stuck around and stubbornly pushed through. c': Thanks for telling us about the broken links, too. A copy-paste mistake. Fixed 'em up!

Thanks! Been decent at shaders for quite some time, but this is the first LD where any of that really came to pass, and even then perhaps not to the most exciting extent, but hopefully there'll be even more fun with that sort of stuff in the future! As for whose puzzle takes the cake, well, we'll be getting around to your entry soon enough too, so we'll have to see about that. c;

Haha, I actually kinda mistakenly punched in the right code to the box way before I got on the computer. That made me a bit confused as to what I was doing, but that's kinda my fault :P

Anyway, some nice shader work indeed, combined with the eerie sounds it did get the mood set up nicely. Great work!

Wow, I'm blown away by the style, really evokes something sinister, and the control mechanic evokes stuff like the 11th guest and works great with the one room concept. Wish i had the option to play full screen! Loved the puzzling too, felt so smart when I figured it out! Amazing work!

Really unsettling game. Music, sound effects and graphics are creating great atmosphere. Amazing job for 3 days. It feels so polished, maybe you didn't put as much content as you wanted but it's still pretty lengthy by LD standards. Cool game!

Yay, figured it out after reading through the comments. So the game is just an endless loop, after all? It was kind of obvious what all those photos meant...

I did like the posterize effect that really gave the lo-fi feel to it. The game's general attempt at creating a creepy and alien environment works quite well in its favor. I can't say I was much of a fan of trying to figure out the password to the computer, but outside of that, most things were pretty easy to figure out. I think it would have been nice to provide some highlights when you mouse-over something so I know what I'm clicking on; clicking the shelves next to the computer, for example, merely prompted the computer password, which was confusing.

Overall, a pretty nice point-and-click that achieves quite a lot with very little. Color me impressed.

Awesome visual style plus the great audio makes for a really nice mood here. Seems like a very solid puzzle game but I have to admit I didn't get very far. Still, I'm impressed!
