Ludum Dare 37 — December 9th-11th, 2016 — Theme: One Room

Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

by Zarkonnen - Compo Entry

You are a hotel concierge, and you must do your best to get all your guests to survive the night. Unfortunately, your boss has forbidden you to move guests once you've assigned them a room. Even more unfortunately, your guests are mostly weird and monstrous.

Learn the odd predilections and secret identities of the twelve possible guests, and arrange them so that they neutralize one another, or at least don't antagonize each other too much.

Hint: The movement pattern of each guest is entirely predictable.

I like the trial error thing going on here. It was fun to try different room arrangements, but my best run had 5 survivors.

Dec 12, 2016 @ 10:20am

Hahahaha, this was seriously great! Loved the whole theme, and the different characters. Music was very fitting too.

Dec 12, 2016 @ 10:24am

Very solid entry. Loved the simple character animations and everyone was distinct enough that it made it easy to remember who was what and what they were going to do. I wasn't able to get more than 5 survivors though! I'm probably missing something...

Great use of the theme, love the werewolves card game reference. Really good job overall

Dec 12, 2016 @ 10:29am

I really like this one, and my guests had sex, that's a plus ...

I think Cthulhu killed everyone in one of my tries. Not sure what exactly triggerd that though.

btw. aren't six rooms five too many?

Zarkonnen says ...
Dec 12, 2016 @ 10:46am

It *is* possible to get 6 survivors, but not with all configurations of guests. All guests who kill have ways of stopping them from killing.

Cthulhu can be stopped by stopping the cultist lady somehow. Killing her, or... other distractions and impediments.

slimabob says ...
Dec 12, 2016 @ 11:04am

FINALLY! After playing for around 10 minutes I finally got an ending where everyone survived!

Really fun twist on the theme, and having to learn the patterns of the characters is an excellent source of depth. Great work!

Dec 12, 2016 @ 11:32am

Wow, that's a really novel concept. Well polished, very interesting characters. Plays like a game of Werewolves of Millers Hollow, but you are the storyteller :D

Most guests behave sensibly, and are fun to play. Really like things like the delay effects (vampire, etc.)

Great job!

Very cool concept, was nice to see the nights play out.

Dec 12, 2016 @ 12:17pm

I'm not a huge fan of the fact that there are, as you said, unwinnable scenarios. But I love the characters and how each one of them has different traits/patterns, even if I haven't figured out all of them yet. Goddamn Cthulhu lady...

Dec 12, 2016 @ 12:49pm

Cool concept, interesting to see all the interactions.

Cosmic-Hawke says ...
Dec 12, 2016 @ 1:24pm

This was fun and a very good idea. I would have like if there were preset groups of guests so all the scenarios I played were winnable. Regardless all the characters had interesting traits despite the simple graphics and it was fun seeing how they interacted with each other.

Dec 12, 2016 @ 1:27pm

I might come back to this one when I have more time to try and get a better score. The interactions between the characters are interesting and as mentioned in other comments the characters are memorable and predictable.

I don't know that I have a bad thing to say on this one. Nice work.

Hey man, about my game not working on web version, i fixed now, i just accidentaly left on "draft mode" instead of "public mode" so only i could play the game, so really sorry about it!

I will test your game later when i got more time and vote / comment here again, if you can test my web link again, i will be appreciated!

Oks i am back now!

Very good game there. Its kind of a "try-fail-try again" kind of game with different possibilities.

I couldn't save all 6 members yet, i just noticed that you have to memorize what each guest really is and what he does, but i still don't understand how they choose each room, if it random choice or not.

But it was a very creative style of game, very good job, really liked it!

I had a lot of fun playing a handful of times. Still havnt gotten 0 deaths haha pretty challenging. I wish I had a little more insight as to what was going on or how each character is affected by the others- ill keep trying.

overall a strong entry, innovative and fun. Great job

Dec 12, 2016 @ 9:41pm

Dec 13, 2016 @ 12:32am

I got lucky, 6 survivors on the first try. After that only a maximum of 5 survivors.

It was fun seeing the different interactions. I'm not sure whether the way they travel to other rooms is random or not. The music definitely seems to be random notes, though. :D

Not sure it stuck to the One Room theme all that much, but a fun game to play.

Nice game! Would be nice to have some more information about the guests up front. I saw it more as a comedic game than a puzzle game though since as far as I could see there wasn't a way to get everyone to survive since you didn't know beforehand all the guests you would have. It was also difficult to determine the behavior of each guest, like what rooms they were going to visit during the night.

With the amount of interactions between characters, it almost feels like a continuous story is played out every night. I guess if expanded in scale, it would get really busy :D

And I finally managed to get 6 survivors :D.

Dec 15, 2016 @ 4:13am

Interesting use of the theme. I had a really difficult time getting the guests to remain alive (especially with effects like Cthulu lady and Mr. Dracula). At the end I would get kind of frustated at the guy going "two dead! tsk tsk!" and it's like, maybe you shouldn't run a hotel for murderers.

Really interesting take on the concept though!

Hello! First of all, this definitely should be labeled as "possibly offensive content" because of the suicide guy :(

That said, I really liked the concept! It's a lovely puzzle to try and figure out, and after I finish writing this I'm gonna give it a few more goes. I also liked the character graphics. They're really simple, yet very expressive of personality, and the animations enhance them well.

I have yet to get 6 survivors, especially since I haven't figured out how to keep that one guy from killing himself. Perhaps I need someone to take his gun?

Good game!

Zarkonnen says ...
Dec 19, 2016 @ 6:39am

acotis - I labelled it as "unsuitable for children", but yeah, maybe it should be labelled as "offensive".

And indeed, if you take the suicide's gun, he can't shoot himself. There's also another way to make him survive.

everything in this game is genius, I liked every part of it accept the fact that sometimes I had no choice but to watch the entire night knowing I had no chance to prevent the death :(
character actions, animations and sounds are perfect and wow you made it all by yourself... ~_~

oh and, Raquelle added so much to the game, when she entered the room attacked by the vampire I was like "holly fuck .___. there's even an orgy in this game?!" haha

ZYXer says ...
Dec 26, 2016 @ 11:55pm

It took me about 25 goes, but I finally made everyone survive. However, I think there was more luck involved than skill.

As I already told you in the coffee shop while you were making the game, I absolutetly love the idea. The graphics are simple, but perfect. And together with the sound that you added, the game is hilarious.

My big problem with the game is that I cannot plan the nights enough. Hence I cannot perfect my strategy and therefore I lose interest quite quickly. First of all, there are two pieces of information of which I am not sure if there are random or if the system is so complex that I don't understand it. (I know it's not random, but it feels random.) It would be nice if these pieces of information were either stated somewhere, or - even better - there were visual hints:
- In which order will the guests do "their thing"?
- If a guest does "his thing" in another room, where will he go once he leaves his room? (Here for example, you could show with an arrow where the person is looking, to indicate what their algorithm for finding a room is.)

Also, I actually would like to reassign rooms. I think it would be hard enough like that. (I know, you did that because of the theme.) It would also be easier to try out combinations of guests you haven't tried out yet to see how they interact. And as you stated in your blog post there are over 5 million combinations, so even with reassigning, it would be a new challenge with each go.

Anyway, I hope these comments aren't too harsh, I still think you had a brilliant idea and I especially love you "sexy" sounds :P

ZYXer says ...
Dec 27, 2016 @ 12:20am

Okay, I played it another 25 times, didn't get a single night with 0 deaths... I'm starting to understand in which order the guests do "their thing" and in which rooms they go. But not a 100% there yet.

BlueTheLemon says ...
Dec 27, 2016 @ 1:48am

Xanjos says ...
Dec 27, 2016 @ 5:49pm

Like the others have said, the game takes a lot of trial and error to actually win but I liked the mechanics a lot and it's an excellent take on the theme plus I found the overall game pretty funny as well (Only thing that's missing is a fast forward button as sometimes the animations take too long to play out).
