Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

Omega Robot

by mattparks5855 - Compo Entry

Can you save your robot from a hostile world?

Omega Robot is a simple 2D single room maze game where you control a robot that is in search for its missing computer chip (at the finish of the maze).

Your robot's ship was shot down over a hostile lava world by a unknown species of aliens, and you must avoid them and find your computer chip that will allow you to escape their world.

Use WASD to move, F2 to take a screenshot, F11 to enter fullscreen, and Escape opens the pause menu where you can navigate with your arrow keys and Enter.

This was made using LWJGL, running from my own Engine (Flounder). This was a test run to see how well my engine could work with 2D games.

This is my first Compo, I wanted to learn from this event to do better in the future.

Thanks for checking out my game, please leave feedback; feel free to take a peek at the source code as-well!

All logs are found in %appdata%\.Omega Robot, or on Mac/Linux they will be found in your user directory \.Omega Robot. If your game crashes please post the latest log into and send it. I really want to fix any bugs with this game and my engine!

When I ran the .exe, a screen opened then closed, making a click sound. Couldn't get it to run :(

Source code looks nice. Mmmmmm entity-component systems...

Overall not bad. The fact you were using your own engine is very impressive. I hope you're able to add a bit more to it in the future. I hope you continue to enter in compos. Good job

If your .exe does not open, try to download the Mac/Linux .jar, they are not platform specific. Make sure you guys have Java 8 JRE. The engine may crash if your computer does not support OpenGL 3.0.

What really shocked me was the use of your own engine. It appeared to have all necessary uses of an engine, and was full of potential. The game itself, however, was quite simple and only hinted at all the potential it could have.

Graphics are okay, music would be an improvement. Some enemies were I think impossible to dodge. Overall, though, it's a good first entry, and there's a lot where this could go in the future.

nice first entry. Has everything a game needs and using your own engine is quite the achievement.
On the gameplay side I would have wished for a more interesting level design, allow me to feel clever and find a "good" path that allows me to avoid enemies.
Really good start though, keep it up!

It would be good if the maze changed between resets.

A pretty generic maze. Enemies are quite useless (they won't even hit me when I'm on their way; they will turn around instead). Not bad.

You've found a good way of showcasing/making and example for your engine. Mmmm colorful logs.

Non-runner for me on MacOS, and no logs seem to have been generated. Sorry :(
