Ludum Dare 37 — December 9th-11th, 2016 — Theme: One Room

Well, Mike ran in to problems getting ldjam.com working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

UnfairBnb

by cynicalmonkey - Compo Entry

You are trying to make ends meet by renting out your spare room.

**Update***

so now its not 3am and I am not rushing to meet the deadline here is the game.

You have a spare room and lots of expenses so are looking for a way to keep your level of luxury where it is without being unable to afford your own rent. You have a spare room so you have put your details on the trendiest app for of the grid letting, UnfairBnB. Knowing very little about people you can pick who you want to share your house, but be careful because you never know how secure someones job is, or if they might skip out on paying the rent altogether.

Made in about 10 hours in the end due to other commitments, most of that in a 7 hr final stretch(seriously 7hrs prior to deadline I had about 3 scripts and one UI element) so a lot of parts dropped due to time limitations and wanting to get something playable out.

******Read After Playing******

- the expenses would come with a level of joy they bring, where a minimum amount of joy is required to go on.Dropped due to not having the time to implement it in a way that wasn't about as subtle as a brick to face;

- deposits from the tenants just an added risk reward element whether more money upfront is required of higher long term gains - dropped for simplicity

- expenses can be chosen rather than assigned at the beginning, wanted to give the player freedom to risk a higher standard of living but with the dropping of the Joy level it was extra work that would have no in game benefit.

- Tennants history, if you rented to a tenant before you would know about it to help inform your decision - dropped for time.

- better art and music - dropped for time

I also generally operate a You Play Mine, I Play Yours Policy, so leave a comment and i will prioritise making it to your game :)

The interface is a bit unintuitive, a advance day button would be great (or maybe I simply missed it). The game itself was good, I just had the feeling that I don't have that much control.

I found myself clicking everywhere at first. But as soon as you understand what to do, it is quite engaging. Neat.

How do I win? :)
Stopped playing once I got to day 500 with a little over £14k

Impressions before reading the "Read After Playing"-part:
- I understood I needed a tenant, managed to put in ad
- UI was a bit unintuitive
- I figured out how to progress time
- I figured out I could cancel one expense per day by clicking them(was not what I meant to do) so I went on cancelling all of them since it didn't seem to affect me in any way except costs
- Proceeded to contract the tentant staying the longest and paying the most, then proceeding max time until tentant left, rinse and repeat

Graphics were ok
Could not stand the music, sorry :)

I enjoyed the game, it was an interesting concept and decently challenging, and I'm impressed it works as well as it does given the amount of time you had. I think something cool you could do if you wanted to continue with this is have renters be willing to pay more if you keep more of the expenses. Art and music were alright and it was fun, good job :)

It was fun! I always tried to pick tenants who would offer crazy lot and then hoped they would actually pay it :D But I think it would be nice if the offers would be less random. I always chose the best ad quality and the variety of offers was way too huge. Anyway, it's an interesting idea and it would be fun to see it more developed!

Interesting game idea. I played it for a while, but most of my tenants left very soon. Maybe I did something wrong. ;) I missed a 'next day' button. The music was not my taste. ;)

Interesting game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 37 games, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/hYD1PzuDX-0

Ahah this is dumb but fun!
It's amazing to be able to put out a Managing game that deep in such a short time. Solid entry, good work here!
