Ludum Dare 37 — December 9th-11th, 2016 — Theme: One Room

Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

Hero Wardrober

by Detocroix - Jam Entry

This is a small dress up game (slightly stressful too, I think) where you're trying to match gear to requirements of the, slightly dumb, wood people :)

Basic gameplay is simple drag and drop, you have to aim item to location it is supposed to go to (shields and weapons to hand, helmet/hat to head) and you've only got short moment to describe what they are saying and what you need to throw on them. I highly recommend looking through the item selection before opening the shop!

NOTE: You probably need a fairly hefty machine to run this, at least a proper GPU if nothing else :)

Day 1 - It took me forever to come up with a proper idea for the LD37. I didn't feel the topic really "grabbed me" and my initial ideas were beyond lame. The Day 1 was almost half way through when I finally got a half decent idea. Initial idea was somewhat similar to what Hero Wardrober ended up being, but I was thinking of doing a similar game where you built cars for customers. I didn't really pursue the car builder and it just evolved, conceptually, to what my entry is.

On the first day I managed to make nearly 75% of the basic gameplay, I had customers, drag and drop interface, and quests and I felt like I'm very close to finishing it up feature wise. When I went to bed, I was certain it would only take me couple of hours of coding before I could start on the art and content. Oh booooy was I wrong.

Day 2 - The day started really nice. I was on the roll! But them couple of hours in, it started slogging and dragging along as I realized I had zero gui and zero feedback on the gameplay, and then IRL things popped up and I lost a lot of time sorting non-LD things out and didn't have time to work on the game. 5 hours to the submission time (compo) I literally had everything done code wise, I had temporary art set for characters and gui, but no content and no actual art.

I was devastated. I hate "converting" from Compo to Jam because it feels like I failed. By 4 hours to Compo submission time I realized I just can't finish it, not even with temporary art, and I was already constantly mistyping variable names and functions (Hello Random.Ranger()) and just decided to go to bed.

Day 3 (Jam) - Obviously I slept horribly :D I still wasn't quite sure if I should have just chalked it up as a failure, but I started working on art anyways. And still, with the limited amount of art I managed to produce (along with menus etc), I ended up to a very late submission. Ouchies.

Generally I'm very happy with the results. I managed to write all the functions to the game that I had planned, but I would have hoped to have twice or even thrice the amount of content I managed to do, and had I known I'd be this late, I would have probably grouped with someone else (perhaps a proper programmer and focused completely on art and design). My biggest hurdle/fail was losing so much time on both day 1 and day 2, and going with way too large scope for my own skills. I'm still happy with it. Just finishing the LD (even if it was 72h instead of 48h) is always awesome :)

No sounds :(
All art (meshes, textures, everything EXCEPT font, done by me)
I used ShaderForge to create basic shaders because Unity default shader doesn't support tiling of individual channels.
All coding by me.

Nice graphics, well done! The gameplay is a bit weak, but I think I figured the basics out. Very nice!

Fun and stressful takes a while to figure out, could have benefitted from audio like you mentioned but I had a great time playing it!

Wowsers, the graphics are lovely!
The game is pretty tricky, mostly in hitting of specific hotspots to grab items and put them in place. I didn't mind guessing what the right equipment was, though I think I only managed to decode the dragonslayer, magic council and warrior outfits.

Still, very cool visually.

The text makes it a little confusing, seems like there is not enough time to react. But its fun, required you to learn. Nice art.

Visually very pleasing, but gameplay wise kind of lacking, they leave so quickly i couldn't even manage to drag the items on them.

Dec 13, 2016 @ 2:27pm

I found that the people coming in would often be poorly randomized, as they all wanted the same thing. Aside from that, the graphics are great and the gameplay is both charming and stressful. Nice work!

Pretty enjoyable and funny entry.
Although the items were a bit hard to drag and drop properly and really easy to miss, and the weird spelling was confusing at first.

Very cool looking - nice models and artwork, best I've seen so far. I would have wanted a little more time to choose gear at least at the start. I played several games before I even got one person the right thing, and I still don't think I've figured out every match. It was also hard to hit the little boxes where the gear would attach, too - maybe just a general big box would be better. But visually very impressive, and totally charming when the corpses come flying back at your shop. Nice work!

Would have been great to have some music and sfx in there aswell.
I personally like the fact that they were so fast, it keeps it interesting and challenging.

Good work!

Khud0 says ...
Dec 13, 2016 @ 2:39pm

The game is extremely fun, but a bit too intense and I couldn't enjoy it to its full potential because I couldn't understand what to give to the people.

Also, I believe that the game would benefit if you either could just click on the item insted of drugging or if a player could drop the item at any part of the body (too hard to hit the hand in time, for example).

I don't slay dragons for a living, so I was not sure what to give for that, but this eez a kul concaept. :P

Maybe the time window is too small. If you don't have a CTS already, you're gonna get one :)

All in all, a very nice entry.

Also, I love the graphic style !

Dec 13, 2016 @ 3:15pm

The graphics are amazing. However it is quite hard to figure out what to do. A screen at the very beginning explaining that you have to satisfy your customers need would be nice because at first I was just giving random weapons and I did not understand I was losing. Even knowing what to do, the time to read (and understand, the writing is a bit special), there is not much time to actually give the weapons. Increasing this time would be good. It is a pity also there is no sound :(

Almost impossible with a rollerball mouse, but gave it my all! Love the art style.

Dec 13, 2016 @ 3:35pm

This was a fun idea. Sound would be nice and I felt like I barely had enough time to drag and drop each piece of armor on to the customer.

Dec 13, 2016 @ 3:35pm

I liked the look of it, and the basic idea seemed fun, if a little simple - the gameplay was too quick for me to enjoy, though. I would've prefered longer times and more complex decisions, I think, but lets chalk that up to personal taste. Solid effort.

Dec 13, 2016 @ 3:54pm

After many rounds I still couldn't find out rules. For example, when I found out that dragonslayer needs red shield, I noticed one dragonslayer still died after I gave him it. Plus time is moving to fast and dragged items don't always stay on client. But still I had fun and great you did make it through weekend despite problems!

Dec 13, 2016 @ 3:54pm

Amazing graphics but the gameplay was a little bit clunky. Figuring out what people requested was quite enjoyable but I found putting things on people way too difficult. Great effort though!

Dec 14, 2016 @ 12:50am

Was quite hard to figure out what the customers wanted, and it was really hard to read the text fast enough and then get them their stuff. Still, after a while it was possible to start looking for a keyword and matching that to an Item. Still not sure if I figured it out all the way, but was decently fun at any rate.

Dec 15, 2016 @ 8:57am

I really like the art. Personally I think the game was moving too fast (it could start slow and speed up). And since there is no explanation about what each customer wants it's a rather frustrating first experience. I think it would have helped to telegraph what each customers want for the first three or so customers of each type (knight, barbarian, mage..) to understand what to do and not just trial and error the whole thing.

I like the idea, but I had a good bit of trouble figuring out what each request really needed. The awkward spelling of the wood people didn't help me. ;)

The graphics are fine, and I quite liked how the result of each wardrobing rolled into screen in red or green. I would've liked some from of mouseover on the items to help against my many misclicks.

Lack of sound is a shame, because that feedback would also help a lot in clicking/dropping items correctly.

If only you'd have had the time for these things, right? :D

Nice one. I only understood what dragonslayers want, and I couldn't throw more than one item on the same customer, even though I've tried almost everything on some warriors, barbarians and magicians, so I believe more than one item is required.

A little bit difficult to understand what do they even want when they introduce themselves, plus this drag'n'drop while simple clicking could do nicely, but very cool visuals and funny idea.
