Space Pals

by dydx - Jam Entry

Description:

You’re an incompetent captain who tries to deliver supplies across the galaxy, but often fails to get your deliveries in on time. This is because you’re cheap and you refuse to spend money on ship maintenance even though it’s falling apart and often breaks down mid-voyage. Your crew is threatening to leave because they work on commission and didn’t get paid out on your last job -- your ship stalled out and ended up missing the delivery deadline. You’re out of money and making this string of deliveries is your last chance to keep your ship without going into the red and having it repossessed by the intergalactic bank.

Controls:

All you need is a mouse! You can also use the Escape key to close panels, if you prefer.

Excellent game! I gave it good marks almost everything. It was a good concept, with well-written story, and good audio and visual cues. I only have a few points of feedback:

First, I had a little difficulty on the first part, because I didn't realize it was a mouse-only game, so I was trying to use up and down on my keyboard. Once I figured that out, it was okay. I actually found the first task a little difficult, but not impossible. The only improvement I would make is to maybe indicate the up and down buttons.

The second round was very good. Balancing the second task and the first was pretty fun, and the perfect level of challenge for me. No changes necessary here.

When the third task got added, I actually couldn't do it. I tried several times, but the spinning wheel makes things quite difficult, because I kept landing on the wrong spots, which caused the medicine to back up. I think leaving that as another simple button-press kind of mechanic would have made it easier, and more consistent with the first two tasks. There was just too much going on.

I assume there were two more tasks after that (judging by the two more crew members), but I couldn't make it past that task to try it.

Anyhow, great game! It's one I actually might share with some friends, and play again. Great work!

@Sundr0 I just put up the win/linux builds!

@oddityoverseer Thanks for the feedback, I changed the narration to say "click" instead of "press", and I made the wheel a little slower.

Great game, it is very challenging and it took some time to get the hang of it.

Oh my, it's so stressful! And hard!... But I like the idea! Just don't throw so much at me at once, I got too sweaty :D

My favorite clicker! Love it! Everyone who thinks clickers suck, has to play this!

Awesome game! I stuck at missile defence but really as an old Starcraft player I loved multitasking :D Honestly I would love if I could use keyboard and shortcuts.. Because I am masochist !

31Mb for the game seems a bit huge.
I liked the game, mechanisms are great. The increased difficulty make it easy interesting from the beginning to the end. I struggle a bit in the last level. Maybe you could provide some feedback on the direction of the ship. In the second level, I did not understand I had to also control the ship, not directly at least.

Really good game ! The gameplay is intensive, never repetitive and original. The story is funny and interesting, and the graphics and the sounds are well made. Perfect game !

Good writing and mood and a very complete game, with so much stuff to do. Unfortunately I had a hard time getting frther, because I found it way too hard for my puny skillset.
Yet, a pretty god game.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game. I loved the drunken stagger animation on the flying-through-space animation.

I clicked out of the window a number of times because the security screen was too close to the edge and hard to hit. Would have been nice if the game had paused when out of focus, or if there had been another 50px of buffer between the window edge and the side screens.

I also lost at least two runs to the fact that I apparently can't read the word "OUT". Feels natural to have the input on the left and the output on the right, and in the panic I didn't have time to notice this was different. But that's a ridiculously minor nitpick.

I don't think I can say anything else bad about the game. It's well-designed, the graphics fit the theme, the writing's very competent, the sound design and music work well, and the mechanics are solid and polished. Great work.

P.S. - How you managed to keep 6 programmers organized during a LD is beyond me. Congratulations on that.

Hahaha, this is a fantastic game! I loved the humor and the graphics, and especially how the game became harder over time. Fantastic job!
