Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

Life As It Could Be

by tommakesgames - Compo Entry

Tried making a game about life's choices and how to find balance and live our lives in the best way. Didn't really get chance to convey all that I think (got stuck on some technical bits) but there's stuff to be had in there.

Use arrow keys to move. That's it. Be careful with volume because there's a few bugs in the sound I couldn't get sorted!

Because we only had one room, I decided to build a maze that reconfigures itself periodically - a bit like life really. Things change, old doors close, new possibilities open up, and that thing you were aiming for is now out of reach! Etc. etc....

Aim of the game is to go round and pick up various tokens, avoiding enemies along the way. When you get to the end of your time, you pickups and their ratios to each other are calculated and put into a score.

How high a score can you get? What combination of pickups do you think will be best? Do you always get your way and get to pick up everything?

A simple game, but I think a promising start and idea for future polish.

A really cool concept, i love the procedural changing map. The retro style sure add to the mood. It seems a very good idea to develop further. Good job!

PD: The game freezes sometimes on the web browser, maybe because of my computer.

Interesting! This fun game matched your title pretty well I think! I got the feeling that this game is telling us to take opportunities when they arise, because when the moment passes you might miss out forever! But also that you just plain can't have it all so you gotta prioritize. Especially adding time to the clock, always go for the clock! My best score: 3593. Now for some bugs: Retry didn't work for me, it would restart the level but then immediately end and start adding my previous score. When I refreshed the page the audio was missing.

The Atari mood is interesting. The sound when the game ends scared the shit out of me. But after that I couldn`t play anymore because the score keeps adding itself, I don`nt know why.

I like the style and I really enjoyed the map changing around you, and not all at once, but wall by wall... There wasn't much to the gameplay but it was still fun. I like the theme of running out of time and having to choose. And the dog (it was a dog, right?) slowing you down but being cute :)

I think the idea is fine. You can try to polish it more.
Meet the retry bug also (windows ver).
The auto-changeable map is really some work I think?

This is a neat concept, it does a good job of generating a lot of relatable feelings. The mechanics very nicely complement the idea behind it! The only real issue I had with it was a technical one, when I was prompted to play again I pressed a key, a new map loaded in but I just died immediately and my score from the previous round was re-tallied again.
