Blob Catcher

Catch blobs with a grappling hook!

You’re in a room full of blobs, and they have an overwhelming desire to escape. Use your grappling hook cannon to catch as many blobs as possible, and don’t let them escape through the top of the room!

Aim with your mouse and click to shoot.

You’ll have to tie two blobs together to stop them. The first time you shoot, you’ll stick one end of the grappling hook to a blob. Your second shot will grapple another blob. Once two blobs are tied, they’ll be attracted towards each other until they get smashed out!
The farther away the two blobs are, the more points you’ll score!
And, each time you manage to smash additional blobs when the two are attracted towards each other, it’ll double the points you just scored!

This LD edition was special for me, as I was away from home and I didn’t have access to my gamedev computer. So, I borrowed a laptop and I attempted to make a game using only online-based tools (no installation required)

To make the game, I used Scratch 2.0. I’ve always wanted to see whether this tool, mainly aimed to teach programming to kids, could be used to make tiny arcade games too!

I had to struggle with many limitations of this program (no simple way to display text of number onscreen, I had to manually code a way to handle "instances of objects" using an array of numbers, etc.), but I did appreciate all the things it allows you to make while being 100% online. It even has a basic drawing editor included, and the "drag'n drop" way of programming was very easy to understand!

For the graphics, I used a wonderful online pixel editing program called Piskel:

It was the first time I tried it, and it’s very powerful and well thought for creating pixel sprites, animations and tiles. It has a load of clever export options (including scaling), and a nice handling of palette and layers. I really recommend this tool to anyone!

Last but not least, for the sounds, I again used the trustworthy AS3SFXR:

Enjoyed the combo setups, was fun though I didn't really like the pause when blobs are impacting. Good job!

Really enjoyed the game! I think if you slowed done the increase of balls, it would've also given a bit more leeway in scores, forcing user to try and beat their own!

Never thought I'd see a Scratch game in LDJAM, those where the days! The idea is fun but, obviously, the engine did it no favors :P

Why this gameplay didn't exist already?
It's just great!
Sure, the game isn't much pretty, the pauses during blobs ollidings are annoying and its get tiresome after 2,3 games, but this just works! This is fun! You really should dig on this! Add colors, power-up, and you've got a new kind of bust-a-move!

Also, I'm glad to see a game entirely drawn on Piskel!

Wow! That's an interesting twist on what I first thought was going to be a super simple, super classic bubble popper! And then I discovered combos soon after—even better!

I guess I'm not very good at it. Difficulty ramps up rather quickly. My first run was over almost immediately, and I didn't find out about combos until the second run, but the second one went better and I scored 7991 points, heh!

I guess the only missing thing is some exciting music! c:

Really dig the modified bolo mechanic. I'd like to see more of it. the pause during combos was annoying, but the combo idea was very cool. It gets harder very quickly, but a fun way to drive you crazy for a few minutes.

Nice little arcade game that would be a lot of fun on a mobile device! I like the concept of chaining exposiong with multiplier combos for more points, that's very innovative. Gameplay becomes super hard very fast and it's pretty unforgiving, but overall I thought it was a great small action game. Good job!

That was fun, I feel like there is something there, some way to perhaps be able to catch blobs otherwise obstacled with other blobs. Some sling shot or smth.

Lots of fun, pretty cool idea to have blobs connect to one another - I had issues with hitting blobs that close to the bottom of the screen rather than the intended target, but that only made the game more difficult and fun, great work

Nice and funny concept ! Good realization. The only disturbing thing was when the blob is appearing under the cannon and gives the feeling that you didn't fire the rope. :p

9837 points! I tried really hard to get over 10k but that was my closest D=
I thought from the screenshots this was going to be a fairly simple game, but the mechanics of having to tie them together, and then trying to get two to draw together in such a way that they catch as many other blobs in their path to get high combos is really fun!

Difficulty ramps up a bit too fast, but otherwise, this is a very simple concept but super fun to play and well executed. Combos are great. Good work, it's a cool idea!
