Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

Quest of the Wizard

A wizard with a very special room that he can carry around with him has had his Magical Red Orbs stolen in a goblin invasion. Now he is invading their land in search of his Magical Red Orbs.


WASD and mouse to look around and move (Sorry, only keyboard and mouse are supported for now).

The room you start in is special. Four magical doors lead to different places. Once you step through a door, you can turn around and pick it up and carry it somewhere else by looking at the door and pressing E. Put it down again by looking at a wall and pressing E. If you're clever, you can use the door to achieve many things!

Each of the four places has a special Magic Orb. Collect all four and return them to the pedestals in the starting room to beat the game.

There are special items hidden in some of the areas to help you along the way.

The items are:

Hookshot (Q) - When you find the hookshot, you'll be able to grapple onto any wooden surfaces. Even chairs!

Stopwatch (Z) - Use this to slow down time and evade enemies.

Crossbow (Right Mouse Button) - Use this to shoot arrows at things. Enemy things.

Short Sword (Left Mouse Button) - Use this to slash at the things slashing at you.

Have fun! The game is difficult but beatable. Occasionally a door will "break". If that happens, just walk into another area and walk back. Usually does the trick. Or if it's a placeable door, just pick it up and put it down again.

Tips: You can jump on the door to your room. Use this knowledge wisely. Once you get the Hookshot, make sure you look up in places you wouldn't otherwise have thought. You might also be able to push stuff through the door.

Absolute top marks for mood, audio, and humor, but man this game is HARD! I admit that I got completely stuck in the room with the boxes; I managed to secure the orb, but there was no way for me to proceed that I could find. Chairomancer is probably the funniest/coolest villain I've seen in a while. :)

I liked the overall idea of the game. The graphics and the sounds are fine. But I think it needs way more polishing, unfortunately it feels kinda buggy and glitchy all over.

The Chairomancers are cool. :D

The mood and audio were great. The graphics where pretty good in a somewhat terrifying way. It was very hard and buggy though. The first time I played it the doors wouldn't open. The third time one of the doors suddenly put me it this weird flat area where I couldn't move. If it was easier and more polished it would be really fun.

I'm sorry but the combat is just terrible, little to no feedback for hitting things and just wasn't fun. The game was interesting and I did want to get further into the it (went into all 4 initial rooms) but the bugs and the combat just stopped me.

This was extremely clever - possibly the most clever game I have played this Ludum Dare.
The core idea is great fun kind of a portal-but - or should I say Doortal ha ha (sorry could not resist) ;-)
Also really a lot of content for the short amount of time - very impressive.

I think the goblins are really hilarious! It did very well on the audio and graphical side. The gameplay definitely has a dungeon feel to it which is neat.

My PC has a hard time handling the 3d graphics, but I got through it. The game looks amazing, but it isn't really clear when you get hit by an enemy.

Presentationally this is up there with great entries, but there are many bugs, mostly of the collision kind (falling through floors, things moving through walls, etc.). Also I am completely stuck with only 2 orbs and the/a life expansion in my possession. I would really hope you can expand on this, fixing some issues and perhaps clarifying some more stuff. This has potential to be an awesome 90s PC title. Great work.

@zenmumbler: Excellent criticism. I think we chose to do something a bit too ambitious and it was all we could do to hold back the flood of bugs leading up to the final deadline. Quite a few things still need several hours of tweaking and fixing...

A very technically competent game! I'll admit, I didn't get to the end, but I did enjoy all the work you must have poured into this game. There were some noticeable issues, mainly around whether or not the game saved when you died, and some puzzles where the solution seemed to be "jump and hope for the best," but overall, I greatly enjoyed my time with this game!

Very difficult. Had a hard time figuring out any of the puzzles. The movable doors idea was pretty cool, though. Also, I didn't really like the combat at all. I would have rather just had a straight-forward puzzle game without the goblins.

Very impressive how much you managed to get done. 3D models, levels, sounds, animations, different weapons and items, etc. But I would have preferred that the gameplay be slightly more-polished, even if it meant that some of the content had to get cut.

I liked the graphics and the ambiance, but I didn't understand what I was supposed to do. Combat felt laggy and lacked feedback.

Very well done. I agree with the comments about the challenge with this game. I think it could be much better if when you die you came back with more then just one hit point. (maybe not full, but at least half). Regardless overall I loved everything about this game.

The mechanic where you move the door was pretty unique, i found myself excited for each new room layouts as i moved it around.

I really like the idea about moving the doors, feels a little like the movie howls moving castle :) It was hard to figure out if I should explore more in a room or move into another room to find some other item to be able to continue. Add that the limited health, how you respawn with little health, and how the enemies which I killed earlier also respawn in all rooms...

The game feels really cool, but I wasn't able to figure out/ survive to experience all of it :)

Really cool concept but hard! I kept respawning with low health which made combat basically impossible. The jumping on the door mechanic is interesting but something a bit more intuitive might be nice (took me a while to figure out) - the concept has tons of potential. Great soundtrack/SFX too btw. I didn't want to kill the goblins since they sounded so adorable :P Would love to see this with some more polish, this definitely could be a great full game. Nice work!

Good job, I like it! Has a nice feel to it.

Only bugs I came across were my onscreen gui disappeared after dying a few times, and a second of floor I kept falling through - but it respawned me back where I left off, so no problem there.

Yeah we noticed the floor fall-through bug. Apparently it's actually a bug in Unity's CharacterController (and any first-person controller that uses CharacterController at its core) where if you have a lot of colliders in your scene, some of them magically stop working. Because we didn't have time to rewrite a controller of our own, we instead opted to reset you whenever you fall off the level :)

Great use of sound to set the tone and mood of the game, really well accomplished. The gameplay was interesting and had a lot of depth to it.
Had a few problems:
restarting the game wouldn't restart the first sword? I couldn't open the doors after that.
using M1 to open/closing doors as well as attacking got me in a few weird combat situations.

But overall great game.
